The telltale warning signs of an oncoming heat finally got through to Jonah’s over-stimulated brain. Reluctantly, he stopped the heavenly kiss and laid his head on the man’s shoulder, drinking in his scent. If the threat of a heat hadn’t stopped them, the possibility of sex in public would have—he hoped. Jonah assumed RJ understood the need to cool things down and part ways for the evening.

“It’s getting late, and we both have to work tomorrow. I’m not going to be able to think of anything but you.”

Jonah snagged RJ’s hand and tugged his mate towards the path. They walked at a leisurely pace, basking in the afterglow of their first kisses. At length, RJ spoke, eager to share his thoughts.

“You’re amazing, Jo. I never knew it could be like this with someone. I want to see you again this weekend if you’re free.”

Jonah smiled in the fading twilight, wolf yipping agreeably in his head.

“Yes,please. Did you have something special in mind?”

“Maybe hang out at my place, and then make something to eat. I have some errands to run in the morning, but you could come with me for those too. I want to spend more time together.”

Jonah squeezed RJ’s hand, more excited than he let on.

“Sounds great! All I need is your address and a time.”

RJ stopped to send Jonah a text with the information before they continued their walk back to the truck.

“If you can get there by ten, we should finish in time for lunch, and the rest of the day is ours. I don’t know how I’m going make it until Saturday without seeing you.”

Jonah almost allowed a lusty growl to escape, hearing his mate talk that way. RJ didn’t have any idea how deeply committed he was to this relationship already, and it would surely alarm him if he even hinted at such thoughts. After all, it took humans longer to declare their true feelings, and Jonah couldn’t push.

They reached the vehicle and headed for the LRC office, only minutes away. RJ opened the door for him, followed Jonah over to his car, and claimed his mouth for a final kiss goodnight. Jonah moaned, kissing him back with intentional heat. Hard shafts collided as they joined front to front. The kiss came to an abrupt end at the sound of an approaching car, and they put some distance between them. When they were alone again, RJ broke the silence.

“I can barely control myself, Jo, and can’t explain why. I not only want you, Ineedyou. Is that weird? Aren’t we rushing things?”

Jonah placed an open palm on RJ’s chest, enjoying the warmth of solid muscle and his racing heart.

“No, it’s not weird, and who’s to say how fast or slow we should go? We feel what we feel, Rascal, and I need you, too.”

RJ accepted this with a smile that almost melted Jonah on the spot.

“I’ll see you Saturday, then. And Jo? You might want to bring some things for an overnight stay.”

Chapter 16

BEN AWOKE FRIDAY MORNINGand lay unmoving so as not to disturb his mate. While he often began the day by opening the mind-link, he needed time alone to think.Somethingstrange was going on with Jonah, and somehow it involved Evan. Why would either of them be trying to keep a secret from him? As the Alpha, he should be privy to any information affecting the pack. Worse, he couldn’t decide what bothered him the most about the whole thing.

Evan’s explanations for Jonah’s unusual absences were consistent but not entirely plausible. Since when did his work at the LRC office require so many early mornings and late nights? In addition, he’d gone from daily interaction with his family and the pack to virtually nothing. Even Robyn gave him the same song and dance when he’d asked her about it. Stranger yet, each time he discussed it with Evan, he left with no desire to pursue the mystery, content to let it ride.

Could it have something to do with the dreams about Jonah and the human stranger? Neither Evan, Jack, nor Everet reported anything new, yet it seemed the most likely scenario. Weeks ago, Ben told Alpha Sheppard he couldn’t imagine Jonah being the source of a security breach, despite daily exposure to humans at work. What if he were wrong?

What if Jonah slipped up somehow and wanted to cover his tracks? Itcouldn’tbe. He knew his little brother better than that, and he certainly knew his mate inside and out. The circular arguments continued without resolution until Evan began to stir and rolled over to snuggle into his side. The mind-link opened, and Evan sat up with a frown and a sour scent.
