“I’ve scented my mate. He’s... he’s a human.”

Robin bolted upright, her face twisted in confusion.

“WHAT? Ahuman? How? I don’t understand.”

Starting with the first incident at the Market in Cooks, Jonah explained his visceral reactions to the intoxicating scent of a human male he’d never laid eyes on. The whole idea seemed far-fetched to Robyn, though Jonah clearly believed it.

“So.... your wolf insists this human you’ve scented is your mate, and though you’ve never met him, you’re convinced it’s RJ Wilson?”

Put that way, it sounded ridiculous, but he knew otherwise.

“Think, Robyn! I meet human males all the time. They always react to my scent, butI’venever been affected like this before. Besides, you were here with him yesterday and saw what happened. When I got here this morning, I picked up thesame scentin the gift shop! My wolf knows it’s him, and now I do too. I’m not sure I can keep my hands off of him when he gets here! What am I going to do?”

Lightning flashed, followed by a teeth-shaking clap of thunder. Robyn’s mischievous scent hit him right before she opened her mouth.

“I know whatI’ddo—drag him in the back and climb him like a tree.”

Jonah growled at her; eyes lit up like amber beacons.

“Mine! Don’t touch him!”

Realizing what he’d said, Jonah slapped both hands over his mouth and released a frustrated groan. Robyn took pity on him and backed off.

“You know I won’t, and he didn’t show any interest in me yesterday. It seems to me you have at least three problems. He doesn’t know anything about shifters or how we mate, you don’t know anything about humans and their relationships, anduntil you tell him what you truly are, you’re going to have to fake it. It won’t be easy with your pheromones all over the place. I can see why you don’t want me to say anything to Ben! He won’t react well if you bring a human home to meet the family.”

“Crap! I can’t even think about that right now. First, I have to make it through our meeting without coming on too strong. The last thing I want to do is scare him off.”

Robyn thought twice about her answer before speaking, the downpour making an awful racket against the roof.

“Would it help if I stayed this afternoon? That way, neither of you would be tempted to take things too far.”

Not a bad idea, but Jonah wanted, needed, to be alone with RJ at their first meeting.

“No thanks. If I’m going to make a fool of myself, I’d rather not have an audience.”

Chapter 9

THAT SAME AFTERNOON, Fairbanks, Alaska

Mia lay her babe down for a nap and waited a few moments to make sure he slept. She listened to his heart beating, watching his fingers curl and relax as he settled in. Wesley’s striking red hair had darkened slightly since birth, wavy like his father’s wild locks. It amazed her how quickly the boy changed as he grew. As the third of four children, she’d never observed the process with her siblings. Perhaps by the time her next one came along, she’d be accustomed to it.

With her little one asleep, Mia went in search of her mate. He’d been even quieter than usual, having spoken to Jack earlier in the day. This whole issue with humans left shifter packs everywhere on edge, and rightly so. As a True Elder, Everet knew more about the situation than most and freely shared the information with her. She’d seen the dreams—vague, foreboding, and increasing in their intensity as the days passed.

As expected, Mia found Everet in his office, preoccupied and staring out the window. He turned as she entered, eyes dancing with pleasure despite the scent of her disquiet. He knew its cause without opening the mind-link, and her words confirmed it.
