She rubs my shoulder but instead of calming, it only irritates me. I jerk away and I see the hurt instantly on her face.
“Is there anything I can do for you?” Her offer is sincere but right now, when I look at her, I don’t see the woman I was falling for, I only see her as a distraction.
“No. I’m going to be here a while so maybe you should just go back to the cabin.”
“Is that what you want?”
My frustration grows by the second and unexpectedly, I lash out. “Yes! Go back to the cabin Teddi. I was a fool to think I could have it all. I know what’s important and it’s not you or love or anything else. It’s Logan. She’s the most important person in my life and I let her down today because I was thinking with my dick.”
Tears pool in her eyes and her bottom lip trembles. I run a hand over my face and realize everyone in the waiting room, including my mom, is staring at us.
My mom leaves the nurse’s desk and walks back toward us. “Come on, Teddi,” she says as gives me a pointed look. “I’ll call you an Uber.”
As soon as they start to walk away, the swinging double doors open, and I recognize the doctor. His face is emotionless, and I silently pray for the best. He looks up from the chart in his hand right before we make eye contact.
“Is she okay?” My question is out before the doctor has a chance to speak.
“She’s going to be fine. Just a slight concussion. We’ll keep her overnight for observation as a precaution,” he explains.
I feel my entire body sigh with relief. “Thank god. Can I stay with her?”
“Absolutely. As soon as we have a room ready, we’ll take her up. But in the meantime, you can wait with her.”
I turn back to where my mom and Teddi are both standing, huddled together. I nod my head and signal with a thumbs-up. My mom closes her eyes and nods in reply. Teddi continues to look at me with so much longing in her big, brown eyes but I just can’t.
Letting myself fall in love again is the biggest mistake I’ve ever made.
