She swats my hand away and her face scrunches up in anger. “Love me? You don’t even know me! You only know what that file told you.”

“I loved you the minute I saw in the office. I had a meeting with Ginger scheduled and just as I was leaving, I saw you and I just knew you were the one.”

“How on Earth can you say that to me when you have a wife! You made me an accomplice, Devon.”

“I don’t have a wife, Ambrosia.” I look around the hallway, hopeful that all of her neighbors have left for the day because we’re causing quite the scene and the last thing I need is to end up in the tabloids.

“Then why do you need a surrogate?”

“Because I want to be a father!” I blurt out. “I want a child of my own and I didn’t want a wife or even a girlfriend. But that all changed the moment I saw you. Last night, I was reading the contract that I signed with Ginger, looking for a way to back out.”

“It’s too late, Devon. You had the chance to be honest with me last night. I will not start a relationship that’s based on deceit.”

Before I have a chance to respond, she closes the door. The locks click into place and her message is clear. She doesn’t want me anymore. Maybe Anders was right. Maybe I shouldn’t have had her followed. If it’s meant to be, then we’ll find our way back to each other. Hopefully.
