He removes his hand from me and pulls back. His hands find my ankles again, and he lowers my feet to the floor before fixing my dress. Then he stands and hovers over me again, this time putting his hands on the bed at my sides and leaning over to study my face. He’s wearing that cocky smile as he takes me in.

“Many more to come,” he repeats.

“You promiseyou’re going to call?” I ask as I sit in his truck that’s now parked in the driveway at the cabin where I’m staying for the summer.

“I promise,” he says as we exchange phones.

I look at my phone in my hand and see he just added his name and number to my contacts. I smile at the screen. “Okay. Have fun at work.” I scoot to the passenger side, my hand landing on the door handle.

He catches my left wrist in his hand, stopping me. When I look over at him, I find him leaning in. Without warning, his mouth lands on mine, and he kisses me deeply. A long, slow kiss that gets my body going again. I enjoy every breath-stealing minute of it, and when he pulls away, I can’t make the smile leave my face.

“If you get bored at work, you know where I’ll be.”

He smirks. “I may stop by when I get off. I mean, if your friends won’t have a problem with it.”

“No, stop by. I’ll introduce you.”

He nods, and I climb out. I walk up to the front porch and turn to watch him back down the drive and start up the mountain.

I’m smiling when I walk in.

“Tell us everything!” Summer says with a cup of coffee in her hand.

Chloe is sitting at the island in the kitchen, and she’s wearing a big smile of her own. She nods and pats the seat next to her. “Come. Sit.”

“I’ll get your coffee,” Summer volunteers.

I laugh as I make my way over, ready to give them all the dirty details.

JAMESON

I’m hard at work when Kaden approaches with what I’m assuming is another bagged lunch. He puts the bag on the table. “Abby has been talking about expanding the barn and taking on some more horses. What do you think of that?”

I shrug. “If I’m taking care of more, I’m going to need some help or get paid a lot more,” I tell him, laughing.

He chuckles. “Yeah, I said the same thing.” He crosses his arms over his chest. “She’s wanting to take in horses that have been taken away or surrendered. Help get them healthy again, find them homes.”

“I’m not surprised. She really loves horses, doesn’t she?”

His eyes widen. “You have no idea. Apparently, going to her grandmother’s house and spending the summer with her horses was the only happy times she had in her childhood.”

I take off my hat and toss it onto the table as I walk over. “Is there more chocolate cake in there?”

He laughs. “I don’t know. Like the chocolate, huh?”

I grab the bag and look inside it. “I liked it all. Tell Abby thanks for me. She takes care of me better than I do myself.”

He smiles and nods, and he studies me for a minute. “Something is different about you.”

I raise my brow as I take out the bag of chips, popping one into my mouth.

“You seem….happy?” he says, but it sounds like a question.

I laugh. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You’re always so uptight, brooding, angry with the world. But today, I don’t know. Something is different. You seem more relaxed. What’s going on, kid?”
