I think it over, taking a bite of my pizza. “I’ll get back to you on that,” I say, training my eyes on the TV. “I want to make sure I watch every second of this so you can’t say I wasn’t paying attention at the saddest part.”

She laughs and turns her attention back to the screen.

I watch the movie while eating my food and drinking beer after beer. After some time, the two of us finish with our food, and our plates get pushed to the side. We both end up drinking and slouching down on the couch, watching the movie as the couple fall in love and then get yanked away from one another. I see her wipe a tear, and then her eyes slide over to me to see if I’m crying.

“Not yet,” I tell her.

She rolls her eyes and shakes her head. “You have a heart of stone.”

I laugh. “Not nearly.”

She goes back to watching the movie, and I can’t help but watch her instead. She props her feet up on the coffee table and crosses her legs at her ankles. Those pink-painted toes tease me, and I can’t stop myself from dreaming about having those legs wrapped around my hips while I bury myself deep inside her. My dick twitches in my pants while I’m holding my beer, so I set it in my lap to cover it up. The coldness helps to kill any ideas it may have. I force my eyes back to the TV.

Sometime later, the movie ends, and I have to admit it is sad. I might have even let a tear fall if I didn’t have a bet riding on it. I keep my eyes held open, hoping it doesn’t allow them to water. But then something happens that causes me to forget that I’m supposed to be controlling myself. I slip and get sucked into the movie, and before I know it, a single tear is sliding down my cheek. She must have been watching me like a hawk because she yells, “Aaa-haaa!”

I jump, being snapped out of my movie daze. “What?” I ask, quickly wiping the tear away.

She laughs and points in my direction. “You’re crying.”

“I am not!”

“Then what’s this water streak here on your cheek?” she asks, reaching over and running her finger across my cheek.

“I forgot to blink. My eye watered.”

She rolls her eyes. “Mm-hmm. Looks like we’re going fishing this weekend, huh?”

I let out a long breath. “Fine,” I agree.

She giggles and turns her attention back to the TV, where the credits are now rolling on the movie. “So what did you think?” Her head slowly rolls back to look at me.

We’re both slouched down on the couch, our heads resting against the back. “It was good,” I tell her.

“What was your favorite part?” She lifts her brow.

I shrug. “I liked it all. I know I’m a guy, and I’m supposed to be all hard and manly and whatever, but I can get down with a good love story.”

“Really?” she asks, sounding surprised.

“Yeah. I mean, love is something everyone wants. I want to find the right woman who can bring me to my knees, who understands me, who will have my back even if I’m wrong. And I know that if I’m ever lucky enough to find the one, I’ll never let her go. She’ll be the most important thing in the world to me.”

She offers up a seductive smile that makes my heart race. She wets her lips, and that familiar tug pulls at me, wanting me to move in closer. “I want that too,” she whispers. Her eyes move from mine to my lips and back. Her blue eyes are pulling me in, closer and closer and closer. Finally, there’s nothing left to do but press my lips to hers. My hand lifts and moves to cup her jaw. Our lips are only seconds away from touching. I can feel her hot breath against my mouth, and her eyes flutter closed. Everything is moving in slow motion. I’m one second from kissing her when a loud crash from outside fills my ears.

We both jump apart and look around. “What was that?” she asks, fear and panic evident on her face.

“Stay in the house and lock the door behind me,” I tell her, jumping up off the couch and heading for the door. “Don’t open it for anyone but me. Understand?”

She nods her head vigorously, and I rush out the door with my gun drawn. I sweep across the front porch. It’s dark, and it takes my eyes a moment to adjust. I make my way to the steps, and I look down at the ground. All the glass potted plants that line the right side of the steps have been knocked to the ground and busted. Someone was on the porch and must have seen us getting close. They made all this racket to keep us from kissing? I do a quick check around the house but come up empty-handed. I walk back in the front door, finding her sitting on the bottom of the steps. She rushes over to me when she sees me.

“What did you find?”

“The potted plants on the stairs have been knocked off and busted. I think someone was on the porch, watching us through the window. I guess he didn’t like what he saw, and he made all that noise to…interrupt,” I say for lack of a better word. “Why don’t you go on up to bed, and I’ll call the police to make the report. I’ll sit on guard and get the security company to comb through the footage to look for any breaches.”

She takes a deep breath and nods. “Okay. Good night, Kaden.”

I watch as she turns and walks up the stairs. “Good night, Abby.”
