I get all the way in front of his bed before I look over at him and find his eyes open. I rush to my chair and take his hand in mine. “Oh, thank God!” I kiss the back of his hand. “I thought I’d never see those green eyes again.”

“Come here,” he whispers, his voice hoarse.

I lean over, and he cups my cheek with his good hand, directing my lips to his. He kisses me long and slow and deep, and I don’t pull away until he’s wincing in pain. “Sorry,” I tell him, sitting back in my chair.

“Who’s that?” he asks, nodding toward the window. The blinds are open, and my mother has her back turned to us as she talks on the phone.

“My mother.”

He nods. “I heard what you said to her.”

I look up, and our eyes meet. Fear consumes me. We haven’t told one another our feelings yet, and I hate that the first time he heard me say the words, they weren’t even to him.

“I love you too,” he says, and a smile breaks out across my face.

“I love you,” I reply, moving back in for a kiss.

EPILOGUE

KADEN

“Come on, we’re almost there,” Abby says as she walks me to the bed in her room.

“I know. I’m fine, Abby. There’s no need for you to make such a fuss,” I tell her, sitting on the edge of the bed.

She drops down to the floor and begins to remove my shoes.

“You don’t have to do this.”

“Yes, I do,” she insists.

I quit arguing with her and allow her to take off my shoes. When they’re off, I turn to the best of my ability and lie back in bed.

“Are you comfortable? Do you need anything? Pillows fluffed, a drink, food?”

“I’m fine,” I tell her, taking her hand in mine and pulling her down onto the bed.

She lies beside me. “You’re not fine. You were shot.”

“I’m aware.”

“It’s my turn to take care of you, Kaden. Let me.”

“I have everything I need right here,” I tell her, moving my lips to hers, and I kiss her deeply. Knowing how she feels about me is enough to tell me that no matter what happens, she’ll be mine, and I’ll be hers. Forever.

EPILOGUE

ABBY

Things have settled down in the past couple of weeks. Kaden is healing and is up and doing more. He goes to physical therapy, and slowly but surely, he’s getting stronger every day. We’ve managed to replace all of the cameras that got torn down, so our security is back up and running. Things are quiet again. Just the way I like them.

Kaden walks in the door. “You want to come meet the new guy I hired to help with the horses?”

“Yes,” I reply, pushing the plans away for the guesthouse as I stand from my desk. The construction company is breaking ground tomorrow, and I’m excited to get back to building my dream fortress.

We walk out the back door, and he gets behind the wheel of the side-by-side, driving us over to the barn. The man he’s hired is already hard at work. He’s putting the horses out to pasture. He’s tall, tan, and muscular. He’s dressed in a pair of Wranglers, cowboy boots, and a white tank top with a cowboy hat on his head, his short dark hair sticking out the bottom of the hat. When we stop, he turns around. His icy blue eyes nearly steal the air from my lungs. I’ve never seen eyes as cold as his before. They’re striking compared to his tanned skin.

“Jameson, this is my fiancée, Abby. Abby, this is Jameson. He’s going to handle the horses and barn,” Kaden says as we walk toward him.
