“Hello, ma’am.” I hear a man say. His voice comes from the direction of the front door, so I assume the police have made it up the long drive and to the door. I turn away from the mirror and head in their direction.
“Ma’am, your two o’clock is here,”Sophia says, sticking her head into my office.
“Send him in,” I tell her, refusing to look away from the stack of papers in front of me. It’s the plans for the guesthouse that the construction company just sent over. My mother doesn’t understand why I’mwastingso much money on this property. What she doesn’t know is that I want this place to be my forever home. I want to create every aspect just how I want it.
I quickly push the plans to the side, and I look up at the open door to see Sophia leading in the man who must be the bodyguard my mother sent over. I stand as he approaches, and when he gets to my desk, I hold out my hand to shake.
“It’s nice to meet you, Mr. Hill.” I do my best to keep my eyes from wandering over his body. I keep them trained on his face, but that’s enough to have my heart racing. His dark hair is shaved short, and his skin is naturally tanned. He has high cheekbones, a sharp jawline, and a dimple in the center of his chin. His green eyes are framed in thick, dark lashes.
He offers a kind smile as he shakes my hand. “It’s nice to meet you too. Please, call me Kaden.”
I nod. “Okay, Kaden. Please, have a seat.” I gesture toward the empty chair in front of my desk. “Is there anything I can have Sofia get you? Water, coffee?”
He waves his hand through the air. “I’m fine, thank you.”
Sofia bows and makes her way to the door, closing it behind her.
“So tell me a little about yourself. I’m ashamed to admit that I don’t know much other than you were possibly in the military with my brother?”
He nods his head. “Yes, your brother and I used to be pretty close. But that was before our lives took us two different ways.”
I nod. “And how did you get into security?”
He shrugs. “It fell into my lap basically. After I got hurt overseas, I was sent home to heal and do some physical therapy. I ended up falling in love with my nurse. Once I was all healed and we started planning the wedding, it became clear I would need a job to pay for the wedding and honeymoon. I ended up getting hired on with a security company in the city.”
“You know this is a live-in position for the time being, correct? How is your wife going to feel about that?”
“Oh, well I guess she probably won’t care since we’re no longer married. We divorced two years ago.”
“I’m sorry,” I tell him, looking at my list of questions.
“Not your fault. People just…grow apart, I guess.”
I force a fake smile onto my face and nod.
The two of us sit in my office for at least an hour. I get a good feel for his background, and I fill him in on what’s been going on around here with this stalker who followed me here from California. We talk about all aspects of the job, and when we have nothing left to talk about, I offer him the job, and he accepts. I’m not happy about having to be watched in my own home, but I pray this all ends soon, and I’ll be able to go back to my normal life, a quiet life where I can enjoy my property, ride my horses, and take long walks all on my own.

KADEN
Ican’t believe I’m officially working for Abigail Phillips. I have to admit, I’ve had a crush on her ever since I saw her in the video game commercial when I was four. I’ve seen all her movies, and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen every special guest appearance she’s done on TV. Hell, I used to watch all her interviews on YouTube. I was blown away by how naturally beautiful she is, how kind, sweet, and soft-spoken she is. She isn’t like your typical Hollywood actress.
She doesn’t get bad press for being wild and going to celebrity hot spots and clubs. The press she gets is for things like donating her time at a homeless shelter and donating food, money, and clothing to good causes. She’s never had a scandal or an open relationship with another actor. She’s a very private person who seems to just want to do her job like anyone else. Just so happens that her job is a little different than most.
She offers me the job, and I accept. We go over some forms, and I fill out the tax forms needed for my pay. After I sign an NDA for her privacy, she stands to give me a tour of the house and show me to my room.
I follow her, trying my damnedest to keep my eyes off her ass as she walks ahead of me. I fail a few times, but hey, I’m only a man. She takes me to the kitchen, dining room, living room, laundry room, bathroom, and sitting room on the ground level. She shows me all the entrances and exits of the house, including the front and back door and the side door off the kitchen that a lot of the staff use.
Upstairs, she shows me all five bedrooms and bathrooms, including mine. I wish I could see her bedroom. I want to know what it smells like when I walk in it, but she only points at the door as we pass. After showing me the house, she wants to give me a tour of the property. She takes me down into the garage, where we load up in a side-by-side utility vehicle. The garage door opens, and she backs out, following the gravel drive that leads from the gate all the way back to the barn.
I notice the cameras she has placed around the property. So far, I saw one on the gate, around the house, and there’s one on the barn, but I haven’t seen any watching the brick wall that surrounds the property. We come to a stop outside the barn, and we climb out. She pushes open one barn door while I push open the other, then she walks in ahead of me.
“This is where we keep the horses at night,” she says, approaching one of the stalls and petting a horse on its nose. “This is my baby right here. Her name is Pepper,” she says, running her hands over the horse’s coat.
“She’s beautiful,” I say, walking over. The horse is white with tiny black spots all over its coat. It’s easy to see why she named her Pepper. I hold my hand out, and the horse sniffs my palm. When she doesn’t reject me, I touch her nose and slowly pet her face.
“You’re a natural. Did you grow up around horses?”
