“Hey!” Margo says, rushing over. She’s dressed up as a naughty Alice in Wonderland.

“Hey,” I reply, hugging her. Her blonde pigtail smacks me in the face, and I make a joke of spitting out her hair.

She laughs and pulls away, gently pushing me back. “You’re early.”

I look at my watch. “You said eight, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, it’s ten after,” I point out.

She rolls her eyes. “Well, I’m late and still setting up. There are some guys in the game room if you want to play pool, darts, or video games. And remind me later—there’s someone I want to introduce you to.”

I roll my eyes. “I’m not looking to be set up with anyone, Margo.”

She shakes her head. “Not like that, weirdo. She’s just a friend and she’s worried about coming and not having anyone to hang with. I know you two will hit it off.”

“Fine, I’ll meet the girl, but I’m not babysitting or agreeing to a date.”

Margo shows me her palms and backs away.

I grab a drink and head into the game room where I find some old buddies playing pool. Xander and Kevin are standing at the pool table, and when I walk in, they both rush over to greet me.

“Hey, man. Where ya been?” Xander asks, pulling me in for a hug.

“Bar, where else?” I laugh, hugging him back.

When I pull away, Kevin is holding out his hand for a fist bump. “‘Bout time you got out. Hey, did you get the wedding invitation that Mallory sent you?”

“I did. Congrats. Finally tricked her into marrying your sorry ass, huh?”

Kevin laughs. “Yep, figured out the secret: knock her up,” he says around a wide smile. while nodding his head up and down.

Xander jumps in. “Don’t let him lie. He didn’t do it on purpose. He’s terrified of being a dad.” The two guys go back to playing pool, and I stand by while we all continue to talk.

“When’s the baby due?”

Kevin lines up his shot. “December.”

“Boy or girl?”

“We’re waiting, but I’m praying for a boy. I don’t need to be outnumbered.”

Xander laughs. “You’re already outnumbered. Mallory is smart enough that her vote counts twice.”

Xander and I laugh while Kevin flips us off.

“Where’s Ashely?” I ask Xander.

He shrugs. “She’s around here somewhere with Mallory. They’re dressed as cats. Ashely is the tomcat and Mallory is the pregnant one.”

“Expecting a litter, is she?”

Xander laughs. “Have you seen the size of this guy’s head?” He grabs ahold of Kevin’s head and palms it like a basketball.

Kevin pushes him away but he’s laughing. “Hopefully she gets a C-section. I’d hate to think of her pushing this head out.”

I roll my eyes. I can’t help but wonder how my two dumbest friends managed to get married and start reproducing. I’m sure I’d be a father now myself if things didn’t end the way they did.
