“Oh, I work there. I spend more time of my life in that bar than anywhere else. I actually live in the apartment above it, so I never go far. Have you been in there?”
I nod. “I have a couple of times, but it’s been years. I’m not a big drinker. A beer or two at a party, but that’s pretty much it. Was never a fan of the hangover.”
He nods. “Ahhh, I know it all too well.”
“So, do you bartend or just do the book work?”
“When I’m shorthanded, I bartend. I prefer to stay in the back, though, working out the schedule and payroll. I do a lot of the repairs around the building, the muscle work of stocking and receiving shipments. That sort of thing.”
“I’ll have to come by and check it out sometime,” I say around a smile.
He returns the grin with one of his own. “You should. I’ll show you around the place.”
Chapter Six
JACOB
Ican’t deny how attractive Elizabeth is. She has long dark hair that’s curled perfectly. It frames her face and nearly touches her ass. Her eyes are blue, sparkling, and full of excitement. Her face is slender with high cheekbones and full, plump lips. Her body, fuck… her body is amazing. She’s tall, and she has curves for days, a rounded ass, wide hips, a narrow waist, and a rack so big I’m surprised her dress is able to stretch around it. She’s wearing these thigh-high boots with a pointed heel that I’d love to feel wrapped around my hips later.
I shake the dirty thoughts from my head and try to keep my mind where it needs to be—on our conversation, not her body. “I need another drink. You want one?”
“Sure, thanks.”
I get up and head to the beer line.
“So? How’s it going?’ Margo asks when she bumps into me in the kitchen.
“She’s great.”
“See! I told you! I knew the two of you would hit it off. You’re both homebodies.”
I laugh and roll my eyes as I’m handed two beers. “That doesn’t mean I’m starting something up with her, so don’t get excited. We’re just hanging out.”
“That’s all I’m asking for. But don’t be surprised when you wake up and you’re madly in love with her.”
I laugh and shake my head as I head back to the game room. When I enter, Elizabeth is still sitting in the same spot, but she has a girl dressed as a bumblebee leaning against the bar talking to her. I hand over her beer.
“Thank you. Jake, this is Janet. She’s a friend from college.”
I reach out and shake her hand. “Nice to meet you.”
“You too,” she says before diverting her eyes back to Elizabeth and talking her ear off.
I’d like to join their conversation, but Bumblebee doesn’t leave much room for Elizabeth to talk, let alone anyone else. I sit idly by for what feels like thirty minutes before finishing my beer and excusing myself for another. I leave the room and go back to the kitchen. I grab a fresh beer and bump into an old girlfriend from a long time ago. It’s been so long now that there are no feelings left between us. We’re just old friends.
“Oh, hey, Jake. What’s new with you?” Kristie asks.
I shrug. “Nothing much. What about you?” I lean my shoulder against the wall.
“Well, I’m engaged!” she says, holding up her hand to show me her ring.
“That’s great. Congratulations. Who’s the lucky guy?”
“You remember Mark, right?”
Ah, the guy she cheated on me with. I nod.
“Well, things didn’t work out for us back then, as you probably know. But about a year ago, we bumped into one another again, and one thing led to another and here we are! Can you believe it?”
