She holds back a smile and nods. “Sounds great.”
I lead her to the kitchen, and I pull out a chair at the table for her. She sits, and I move around her to pour the wine. “I hope red is okay, the market here in town is really limited.”
Lola laughs. “Red is perfect. The food smells delicious. Did you cook this?”
I nod as I take my seat across from her.
“It looks good, too,”
“Thank you. Let’s just hope it tastes how it smells,” I laugh out as I begin serving her.
The two of us begin to eat. “I missed you at the studio today. It was weird working and not hearing that door slam.”
She laughs and her cheeks burn bright. “I really am sorry about that. That door hates me, I swear.”
I smile as I chew. “It’s fine. That door has always been a pain in the ass.”
She laughs as she scoops a bite of spaghetti into her mouth. “I think you’ll be really pleased with the pictures I brought for you. They look great, if I do say so myself.”
“That’s great, but I don’t really want to talk about the pictures right now.”
“Oh,” she says, adjusting in her seat. “Then why am I here?”
I shrug. “Like I said, I missed you today. I wanted to see you, talk to you.”
“About work, right?”
I laugh. “No, not about work. About…everything else.”
“Okay, like what?” She tears off a bit of garlic bread and pops it into her mouth, slowly chewing.
“Like… what was with the sudden shift yesterday in my office?”
Lola looks up at me with wide eyes. Her mouth opens, but no sounds come out.
Chapter Fifteen
LOLA
“Iwas just surprised, that’s all,” I manage to squeak out at last.
“How so?”
I shrug. “I’ve just never heard you talk about a girlfriend before. I mean, that’s what she is, right? Your girlfriend?” I’m too embarrassed to look at him so instead, I look at my plate.
“Was. Not anymore.”
“Oh?” I ask, looking up and meeting his eyes.
He nods. “We broke up a while ago actually. That picture…” Evan shrugs. “I guess I forget it was there. I’m not in my office much.”
“Oh.” I nod. “Why’d you break up?” I ask, knowing I probably shouldn’t.
“Ugh, well she wanted more. More than this house, more than this town, more than me.”
“What do you mean?”
He sets his fork down and takes a drink of wine before giving me his full attention.
