Which has made me feel a little weird because we’re not. We’redefinitelynot, in fact. I’m getting paid for my time, and we’re going our separate ways shortly, in fact.
But Nash hasn’t mentioned a single thing about stuff like that. Not once.
He’s so hard to crack. I wish I could read what’s going on in his head. It would make some things a whole lot simpler. He can just be so damn impenetrable, though!
But tonight is not the night to wonder about our future, if there even is one. We’re entertaining our friends, and I’ve got to put on my hostess hat.
It’ll be absolutely perfect.
“Nellie?” comes a low growl.
I turn around and see Nash standing by the entrance of the kitchen.
“Mm-hm?”
“What are you doing?”
I tilt my head, confused. I’m not sure what he’s asking me. I feel like it’s obvious that I’m preparing our home for Amy and Colt.
“I’m making sure everything is ready for the dinner. You know, food?”
He grins.
“Didn’t Brenda already make sure everything is ready? Don’t we just have to put the meal on the table?” I push my hair out of my face because I know Nash is making sense, but I’m a perfectionist sometimes, and have to double check everything. It won’t feel right untilIknow it’s right.
“Yeah, but I want it all to be perfect. I have to make sure it’s good to go. I mean I still have to wipe everything down one last time, and do you think it’s a little hot in here? Our guests won’t like it if it’s too hot.”
I go back to checking on the food, not wanting to get distracted. If I can finish up in here, I’ll have time to do a quick sweep on the dining room.
But while I’m checking the food, I hear Nash start to approach me, and I look up to watch him. He gets as close as he can to me and wraps his hands around my center, pulling my body to his. My hands go up, palms splayed and resting on his chest.
“You need to calm down, Nellie,” he growls in my ear.
“I can’t. There’s still so much to do.”
“Nellie,” Nash sternly says. “Calm down.” He squeezes me, bringing us even closer together. I take in a mighty inhale, closing my eyes, my body shuddering against him. I’m able to push thoughts of hosting to the back of my head, but my heart rate stays elevated.
I open my eyes to look back at Nash.
“Touching me won’t calm me down.”
“Oh, yeah,” Nash smirks. His face comes close to mine, and his lips nuzzle my neck. “Are you any calmer now?” he mumbles against my skin.
I thread my fingers in the hair at the base of his neck.
“I don’t know,” I breathe. He moves his mouth along my collarbone, his teeth softly scraping the area.
“How about now?”
“Nash,” I sigh. “They’ll be here soon.” He chuckles against me, his body vibrating along mine. He moves his head until he’s facing me. His eyes stare straight into mine while I feel his hand go down my body.
“Are you sure we don’t have any time?” he rasps. I bite down on my bottom lip. I know Amy and Colt should be here any minute, but Amy is chronically late, so maybe we have alittlebit of time.
“Maybe we can –,” I start, but I’m interrupted by the doorbell ringing. I let out a heavy sigh. Looks like Amy decided to be on time. That means we have to put a hold on what’s going on.
“I guess we really didn’t have any time,” Nash remarks.
“Yeah,” I pout.
