Drive to Nowhere

Lucas tapped his fingers over an unopened laptop and sipped his coffee. We didn’t talk about last night, but it wasn’t weird or awkward. We seemed to have some unspoken agreement. We weren’t an item, nor friends, but something more than that, though we couldn’t quite figure out what it was.

“Is something wrong?” I asked.

He arched his freshly calamined back against the chair and linked his fingers behind his neck. “I don’t want to go back to my routine, but I have no idea what to do with myself without it.”

I shoved a spoonful of Raisin Bran into my mouth. “Go for a drive. That’s what I’d do.”

“Where?”

I shrugged. “Nowhere. Just drive.”

He huffed out a sigh. “The whole point of an automobile is to get you from one place to another.”

“Who said that?”

He looked at me like I had told him two plus two equals five. “What else would they be for?”

I lifted my nearly empty bowl and tossed it into the sink. “Come on, we’re going for a drive.”

“Where.”

“Nowhere.” I narrowed my eyes at him. “Are you in or out? Because I’m going with or without you.”

“In.”

“Good. I have the perfect music for such a road trip.”

He smiled. “Ah, yes.Mixtape #10: Drive to Nowhere.”

“Exactly.”

For Taylor - Mixtape #10: Drive to Nowhere

Getting your license is a big deal, getting your first car even bigger. It’s not just a rite of passage. There is a freedom there you had never felt before, but also a responsibility. Be safe, yet relish in that freedom. The best feeling in the world is driving with no particular place to go on a beautiful day with good music to sing along to. Be sure to experience that, even just once… and roll down your windows.
