“Oh. Yes, sorry. Charlie usually doesn’t look anymore. I’ll get you one.”
Thelma came out as I grabbed a menu from the waitress area.
“I’m gonna take my lunch break now. You okay in here?” she asked.
“Yup. Got it under control.”
I handed Lucas the menu and started cleaning the rest of the tables while he read through it. When he set it down, I walked back over.
“Ready to order?”
Lucas looked at Charlie.
“I’ll have one of them pastrami Reubens we like so much.”
Lucas handed me the menu with that intense stare of his. “Same.”
“Sounds great.” I put away the menu and finished up cleaning the tables. When I got to the table where Thelma was eating, she nodded for me to come closer.
“For someone who is not interested in getting involved again, he sure does a lot of staring in your direction.” She bit into her chicken salad sandwich.
“I never said the physical attraction isn’t there.”
Her eyes widened as she swallowed down her bite. “Did somethingphysicalhappen between you two?”
I set down the bottle, hesitating. “We kissed. Once. Well, twice… kind of.”
“How was it?”
“Dangerous.”
She leaned back in her chair, raising her brows. “Do tell.”
“Let’s just say it’s intense.Toointense.”
“If the kiss is that good, can you imagine what the rest of it would be like?” She fanned herself with her hand. “Woo-hoo.”
“I’m not gonna be his rebound.”
She shook her head and shoved a fry into her mouth. “You’re missing out. If I weren’t with Ben, I’d—”
“Don’t even start,” I said through gritted teeth.
“Jealous, are we?”
“Taylor, you’re up,” Ben called out from the window.
I grabbed the plates, ignoring Thelma’s sly grin, and placed them down in front of Charlie and Lucas.
Charlie clapped his hands together once. “Looks delicious.”
“You have any vinegar?” Lucas asked.
Oh, I’ve got plenty of vinegar.
I looked down toward his crotch. “How’s that rash coming along?”
He gave me the first genuine smile I’d seen on him in the last three days. “I meant for the fries.”
