With my heart pounding, I stood there wrapped in his bulging arm, weighing my options as tears poured from my eyes.Should I comply or risk everything by standing my ground? Did I really want him seen like this… with a gun in his possession and practically in the act of kidnapping me, knowing he was a felon?
I wanted to remain strong, but the possibility of jeopardizing his freedom and everything he had built weighed heavily on my heart, too. No matter the fire we were in, I still loved him…still cared about him.
Chapter Five.
Moses
I watched as Mary paced the floor of our private jet. We had reached a point in our marriage where she despised me. The miscommunication, or hell, the complete lack of communication at times, had taken its toll. And the weight of her depression, mixed with the feeling that I had betrayed her, had destroyed us. It was clear she just wanted to be left the fuck alone, but I couldn’t let her be.
“Baby, sit down. We about to take off. It ain’t safe for you to be standing like that.” I told her.
“Fuck you,” she shot back. “Now you care about my well-being?”
“I’ve always cared about your well-being. You serious right now?”
“I’m talkin’ about my fucking heart...” Her bottom lip trembled, patting her chest. “You have it in shambles. Did you think of me first before you did what you did?”
“Aight, baby. You right. Come here.” I stood from my seat and tried to reach for her, but she yanked her arm away from my grip.
“No. Stop this flight and take me home, Moses.”
“Bet,” I turned to my pilot. “Jasper, hit Ocho. Tell him to circle back and scoop us. We changed our minds. We going home.”
Marilyn scoffed. “I’m not going home with you. Take me to my mama’s home. You know what I meant.”
“Jasper, fuck that. Put the phone down. We're still going on our trip.”
Jasper obliged, looking confused as hell. But he was wise enough not to question me, especially when my marriage was in turmoil. I was a ticking time bomb. Instead of pressing me, he put his headset back on and geared up for our flight. Smart man. Very smart man. Worth every penny.
“I don’t want to talk, and I don’t want to go wherever you’re taking me.”
“But you coming, and we talking, ‘cause I refuse to lose you over some bullshit.” I meant every word, even if it made me sound like a villain in her story.
“You call what you did to me bullshit?” Tears streamed down her cheeks as she shook her head. “Moses, you might run these streets, but that won’t work with me. You can’t bully your way back into my good graces.”
“I’m not tryna do that, baby. I’m just tryna get you to talk to me and tell me what I can do to fix us. Just say the words, and I’ll do it.” This time, I pulled her in, wrapping my arms around her tightly so she couldn’t resist.
I hated doing this shit. Hated the idea of taking her anywhere against her will. That’s not who I was, not with her. But she left me with no choice. She hadn’t been home since leaving. Been staying at her parents’ house, ducking my calls, refusing to meet me halfway onanything. She had me going through her mama, Katrina, or Pokey to communicate about Jr. Shit was nerve-wracking. And after how that meeting went, I knew this was it. My only shot. If I didn’t catch her now, I might not have gotten another chance.
It wasn’t about control. It was aboutus. About salvaging what was left before it all slipped through my fucking fingers. She was my wife. My rib. And a nigga was desperate.
Desperate for her to hear me out.
Desperate to remind her what we had.
Desperate not to lose the only person who ever made me feel like I mattered beyond the streets and the money.
So no, she didn’t want to talk. And no, she didn’t want to go.
But she was coming.
Because if she divorced me... I wouldn’t survive it.
“Nothing,” She insisted as I kissed her tears away. She tried pushing me off again, but my size held me firm, and I could see it only fueled her anger. “There’s nothing you can do to come back from what you did.”
“Mr. Mikaelson, I’m sorry to interrupt, but we’re about to take off. For your safety, could you both please sit and buckle up?” Jasper interjected, his voice trembling slightly.
Not giving a fuck about what he was talking about, I stayed focused on Mary, who looked at me with pleading eyes, hoping I wouldn’t go through with this. But I had to; we desperately needed it.
