Her eyes widened like she was disappointed. “So that’s the end of the story?”

Talking with Ali was easy, and clearly, she listened. I smiled, and my face heated as I told her the story. “No, when we were in college, I drove Elon to her dorm.”

She tilted her head up at me. “How did that go?”

I tensed, recalling the worst part of the tale. “Well, we were drinking, and when Elon found her dorm, he was stumbling outside, serenading her until campus police kicked us out.”

She pressed her hand on her heart. “What kind of drunks were you both?”

Honestly, I never drank to excess after college, but at the time, I’d been a rich kid rooming with my brother. I’d forgotten about that carefree time as the years had melted away. “We couldn’t walk straight. He said he fucked up his life and wanted her, so we figured we could use the golf cart and cross campus.”

Her intake of breath reminded me of Maman. “You drove?”

I nodded. “I was stupid, and we were chased out by campus security.”

She then curled her arm around mine. “And Clarissa and Elon?”

I patted her knee under the sheet. “Never saw each other. She transferred somewhere, and her parents kept their mouths shut on what college and where exactly.”

Her stomach growled. I glanced outside the window and saw we were entering smooth sailing. The crew was probably back to work. Maybe after we had something to eat, she would be ready for more, just as I was.
