“Was it okay for you to leave early?” His fingers teased just over where, if he put enough pressure, I might go off like a rocket.

“Don’t,” I whispered under my breath. When I flicked my gaze to the side and saw his sly grin, I reached down and removed his hand. “It was fine to leave early,” I said in response to his question. “My boss told me I have flex time, which apparently they told me at my onboarding, but I didn’t pay enough attention.”

“You do get distracted sometimes.” At that sly comment, his hand slid back up between my thighs.

I sucked in a breath, trying to cool the heat suffusing me. Pointless, but I could try.

He cleared his throat, letting out a sigh. “What did you do today?”

I didn’t even know what he was talking about. “Huh?”

“What did you do today?” he repeated. “You know, at work, wildlife biology and all that.”

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Haven

“You’re gonna pay for this,” Elsa whispered under her breath before launching into a dry explanation about some kind of spreadsheet and analyzing data.

Tommy was blissfully occupied in the back, although his presence was the only reason I didn’t try to make a move on Elsa.

When we got back home, he handed me my phone as he climbed out of the car, dashing toward the rescue program. Elsa put her car in park and whipped her gaze toward mine, her cheeks flushed pink and her eyes dark.

“You asshole,” she hissed.

“I need to show you something.” I removed my hand from between her thighs and caught hers, placing it over my thick length.

“Haven…” She sounded breathless, and I enjoyed that too much.

She let out a laugh, her head falling back against the seat as she gave me a squeeze. My cock pulsed under her touch.

“Haven Silver, you’re going to kill me,” she said flatly.

“Well, we definitely don’t want that,” I said, my voice a dry rasp.

Rolling her head to the side, she locked her eyes with mine. The desire flashing there tightened every cell in my body. “Let’s go,” she said.

Moments later, we scrambled out of her car, stumbling up the stairs. Once we made it inside, I bent her over the kitchen counter.

I knew, I really, really did, that I was in over my head. I was so fucking gone for Elsa. She had no clue I’d been half in love with her in high school. She had no clue how much I’d missed her after she was gone, even though it was just stolen glances in those days.

There were so many things she didn’t know, and she’d think I was crazy. All these years, I convinced myself it was just a little crush. Except her sweetness had always shined through, and then I turned into a grumpy jerk, hurting from the pain of compounding losses.

Now, here she was, thinking this was just some kind of convenient arrangement because we had such good chemistry. Although there was no adjective sufficient for how hot and fast our chemistry burned. It wasn’t burning away; it was only burning hotter. The more I had her, the more I wanted her.

Yet Elsa didn’t know, and I had to somehow keep my shit together. Somehow persuade her this could be more. I didn’t even know how to do that.

Chapter Thirty

Elsa

I was startled to glance down at the text from my mother.

Mom: I’d love to visit.

“What?”

“Everything okay?” Maggie asked from where she was rinsing plates in the sink and putting them in the dishwasher.
