Apparently unable to resist my impeccable logic, she gave a nod.

“Come.” Whirling around, I strode out through the door and straight towards my target. Right now, I already had a strong suspicion regarding who had targeted us tonight. It was time to turn that suspicion into certainty. “Let’s have a look at who is brave enough to aim a gun at my wife, shall we?”

“Yes, let’s,” came a voice from close behind me. “I’m rather curious about that as well.”

Curious? Curious is an understatement.

Without wasting a second, I strode over towards the assassin who lay a few feet away in a puddle of blood and pulled away the cloth covering the lower half of his face. What came into view was a visage with clear Hispanic features.

The next morning, we were sitting at the breakfast table where I was enjoying a luxurious breakfast when my wife’s voice distracted me from the delicious bread and water in front of me.

“How very mysterious,” my dear wife stated, inclining her head towards the paper she was reading. A glance at the thing revealed the headline to me.

SHOCKING NEWS

Prison housing 2 Spanish noblemen mysteriously burns to the ground!

I nodded contentedly.

“Indeed.”

I took another bite. The delectable taste of three-day-old bread never ceased to amaze me.

“Especially,” she continued, apparently unwilling to drop the subject, “since it happened to a prison built from stone. Near the river. A day after heavy rainfall.”

“Indeed.”

That answer did not seem to satisfy her for some reason. She gave me a meaningful, penetrating stare.

I completely ignored it and took a sip of delicious water from my glass.

Her shoulders sagged, and she silently admitted defeat. At least that was what I thought before she straightened again and a far-too-innocent smile spread across her face.

Steepling her fingers, my lady wife leaned towards me and sent me a sweet look. In my mind, two words instantly appeared: Caution advised!

“Mr Ambrose?”

“Yes, Mrs Ambrose?” I glanced up from the documents I had been perusing while eating.

“I think you’ve been working too hard.”

That was one point with which I would vehemently disagree. However, I did not voice my disagreement, but let her continue till she got to her point.

“This is our honeymoon. How would you like to join me in a game of poker?”

Oh.
