I smiled at him. “I would love some water and maybe some soup?”
Jax chuckled. “Sure you want to take on the soup?”
I nodded. “Yeah, I’m sure.”
Yuslan leaned over and kissed my cheek. “I’ll head down to the cafeteria. Anyone else want anything?”
Guadalupe looped her arm within his. “I’ll come with you. I didn’t even get my morning coffee. Jax?”
I looked over at him. “Want anything?”
He perched on the edge of my bed and kissed the back of my hand. “I’ve got everything I need right here.”
Guadalupe escorted Yuslan over to the door. “We’ll bring a spread. Then, we can just pick and sip when we’re ready. Yes, that sounds good.”
And when we were finally alone, Jax nodded. “Scoot over, gorgeous. Let’s make some room for Daddy.”
I barked with laughter as I scooted over and he wrapped his arms around me. He pulled me close, allowing my head to fall against his chest, and I found myself settled by his heartbeat. I closed my eyes and drank in his scent. I threaded my leg between the two of his in order to get just a bit closer.
Then, he started rubbing my back. “Am I the only one scared out of my fucking mind right now?”
I snickered. “No, you’re not.”
He sighed. “I mean, pregnant. You’re pregnant.”
I closed my eyes. “Yeah, I am.”
“How are those antibiotics making you feel?”
I yawned. “Sleepy.”
He kissed the top of my head. “Well, you close those pretty eyes of yours and get some rest. I’ll be here when you wake up.”
I peeked up at him. “Can you make me a promise?”
He nodded. “Anything.”
I threaded my fingers through his. “Should we attempt this and should something happen to where we can’t be with one another, promise me you won’t take this child away from me.”
He sighed before he gripped my chin, and his gaze grew serious. “No matter what happens, I would never keep our child from you. Ever. And you can quote me on that.”
And as my eyes fell closed, I knew everything would be all right. I didn’t know where we’d step or what came next for us, but I knew as long as I had Jax at my side, I could do anything because he made me feel strong, and confident, and competent in every decision I made.
Which was what I needed now that I had to make a decision that affected another human life.

Iheld Lily’s hand while the rhythmic beeping of her machines kept me clinging to my faith. To be honest, the smooth, rhythmic beeping was the only thing giving me hope that she’d pull through this. I had been through enough with these fucking machines to know that when they stopped, or when they started making too much noise, then that meant something was wrong.
So, to not hear them raging out of control brought me peace. But it didn’t stop me from worrying.
“You’ve had a loved one pass away in a hospital, haven’t you?”
I looked up and saw Guadalupe standing there with two coffees in her hand. She handed me one before she pulled up a chair beside me and settled her free hand against Lily’s thigh. I leaned back, still clinging to her hand as I sipped the God-awful hospital coffee she had retrieved from the cafeteria.
I was still grateful that she brought it to me, though.
