He bent down and kissed me. “You have nothing to be sorry about. Neither of us knew or even suspected.”
I sniffled. “But, a woman is supposed to feel these things.”
He snickered. “We’ve been feeling a lot lately. It’s been a rough couple of months. Don’t be so hard on yourself.”
My lip quivered. “What if something happens to this baby, too? What will we do?”
He nuzzled my cheek with his nose. “I take it you want to keep this baby?”
I sighed. “I mean, removing my fallopian tube means I’ve only got one ovary delivering eggs to my uterus now. And I can’t honestly say I come from a long line of fertile women.”
He chuckled. “We’re about to do this, then, aren’t we?”
I shook my head. “I really don’t know. I can’t even fathom speaking the words just yet. But, the idea ofnotdoing this just feels…”
He gazed into my eyes. “Wrong?”
I swallowed hard. “Do I sound completely crazy?”
“No,” Guadalupe said as she rubbed my thigh, “you don’t.”
Yuslan perched at the foot of my bed. “And whatever you two need going forward, we will help.”
I smiled as Jax nodded at each of them. “Thank you. Both of you. From the bottom of my heart.”
I giggled softly. “And mine.”
Jax sighed as his gaze returned to me. “I wish Dad were alive so I could call him. He’d be so damn ecstatic.”
I smiled. “I know.”
“He always wanted a grandchild, you know.”
My smile faded. “You know he’s still looking down on you, right? Cheering you on, just like always.”
His eyes filled with tears as he side-stepped my comment. “Whatever you need, we’ll take care of it. Period. No matter what, okay?”
I sniffled. “I love you, Jax.”
He seemed taken aback by the words and judging by the way Guadalupe gasped, I could tell she was as well. But I meant what I said. Even if he didn’t say it back, I had fallen in love with this man. This strong, intelligent, damaged, hurting, beautiful, frustrating, angelic man.
“You don’t have to say it back,” I said, “but I can’t go another second without you knowing how I feel. I love you, Jax, and just like you’re going to be here for me, I’m always going to be here for you.”
His eyes searched mine. “You’re not lying, are you?”
I snorted. “I’d never lie about something so beautiful. You know me better than that.”
He leaned forward, so his forehead pressed against my own. “I don’t want to ruin this moment. I don’t want to add anything to it because I’m afraid it’ll burst and put too much pressure on you. Just—”
I smiled softly. “Ever the protective one you are.”
He kissed the tip of my nose. “Just know it’s coming, okay? What you want to hear is coming.”
And that was enough for me.
“Yuslan?”
He rushed up to my side. “Yes. What is it you need? I can get you anything.”
