The world fell silent as everyone walked out of the room. Everyone except my family, however, and the doctor, of course. I stared up at the ceiling, wondering what this might mean.

Then, it hit me.

“Why do I have an incision site?” I asked.

The doctor perched on the side of my bed and placed his hand against my shin. “I’ll take this one step at a time, and you stop me if you have questions. All right?”

I nodded. “Okay, I can do that.”

“Wonderful,” he said as he gripped my file close to his side. “For starters, the reason you started getting so sick so suddenly is that you were actually pregnant with twins.”

I gasped. “What?”

Jax squeezed my hand tightly as I sat myself up.

“I have twins in my uterus right now?”

The doctor shook his head. “One of the pregnancies was ectopic. It lodged its way into your fallopian tube, and we believe that the… orgasms you experienced with Mr. Jackson up until the time you started vomiting caused the fetus to dislodge.”

I blushed furiously. “Okay. That makes sense. But, I take it by the way you’re looking at me that you couldn’t save the pregnancy.”

The doctor took the hand that Jax wasn’t holding. “No, we couldn’t. Ectopic pregnancies aren’t usually transferrable, especially when they’ve ruptured your fallopian tube. By the time you got here, you were bleeding internally, and we couldn’t save the pregnancy or your fallopian tube. We removed both laparoscopically, but that incision site has the beginning stages of an infection. Hence why it hurt when I pressed around it.”

I didn’t even know which way was up anymore. “But, I’m still pregnant?”

The doctor nodded. “Yes, with the remaining fetus.”

“What do you need, princesa?” Yuslan asked.

I struggled to take deep breaths. “Just—just give me a second.”

The doctor stood up. “Her oxygen level is dipping. Let’s get her a mask.”

Jax’s voice grew harsh. “You aren’t going to do this to me, okay?”

I looked over at him as the doctor put the mask around my face. “Huh?”

Jax looked me dead in my eyes. “You aren’t going to leave me, understood? I’m in this, no matter what you choose. So, don’t you dare die? You hear me?”

The doctor chuckled. “She isn’t going to die, Mr. Jackson. Of that, I can assure you.”

I raised my hand up and cupped his cheek. “I won’t. I promise.”

“Now,” the doctor said, “just take as many deep, unbroken breaths as you can. You’ll feel better in a minute.”

And he was right. The more I breathed in the oxygen, the better I felt. The nurses came in and got me started on IV antibiotics to kick whatever infection they had stumbled across, but I couldn’t get my mind off that one word.

Pregnant.

The second the doctors left us alone, Guadalupe and Yuslan started bombarding me with questions. They asked me what I needed, and they asked me if I had anywhere to go to have help with the baby. They asked me about my medical history and where I had been staying for the past couple of months since they had come by and I hadn’t been at my place. But, all I could do was stare up into Jax’s face.

Holy shit, I was pregnant with his child.

“You guys,” I said softly, “shh.”

They both stopped talking before I reached out and took both of Jax’s hands in my own.

“I didn’t even know, Jax. I’m so, so sorry.”
