But, when Jax stepped out in front of my vehicle before I could make my turn, my forehead flopped against the steering wheel.
“Just leave me alone!” I cried out.
He slammed his hands onto the hood of my car, and it popped my head up.
“What the fu—”
Jax interrupted me with his own raised voice. “Not until you say, ‘Thank you, Jax.’”
I blinked before I rolled down my window. “Not a chance in hell.”
He came over to my window. “Then, you aren’t going anywhere.”
I took my foot off the brake. “You aren’t my friend, and you certainly aren’t my father.”
He rushed back in front of my car, and I slammed on my brakes.
“What the fuck, Jax?”
“Three little words and you’re good to go.”
I revved my engine as I kept my foot on the brake, trying to scare him. But, he met my threat with his own bluff. He stood tall, with his head held high in pride, and he clasped his hands behind his back, patiently waiting for me to do what he asked.
“You’re just as pompous and asshole-ish as you ever were, Jax Levy. Now, get out of the way before I run you down.”
And as we stared off with one another, I took my foot off the brake. I didn’t throttle my car into his body, but I didn’t stop it, either. Which meant that eventually, unless he wanted to be standing in the middle of traffic, he moved, watching me the entire time as my car eased down the road and out of sight.

“Good morning, Mr. Levy.”
“Welcome back, Mr. Levy.”
“Mr. Levy! Three times this week. I think we might finally be rubbing off on you.”
I grinned as I walked up to the counter. “I have a facial and a manicure scheduled for today.”
The pretty little girl behind the computer screen typed away. “I see we do have you down! It’ll only be a few more minutes, and then they’ll be ready for you.”
I nodded, knocked my knuckles against the countertop, then went to sit in the corner. I chewed on the inside of my lip and gazed around, twitching every time one of the doors opened. I hadn’t been able to get Lily out of my mind ever since I had seen her at the beginning of the week. It never once occurred to me that she’d still be in town and the fact that she had filled out that stick-thin little skeleton of hers made me salivate at night. I wanted to see her again. I wanted to see her and annoy her until she had no other choice but to fall into my arms just so I could prove to her exactly why she had needed to cave to me when we were kids.
After all, it was why I had teased her so damn much.
But, I went back for my facial and my manicure and never once saw her. I came back the next day for a pedicure, and I didn’t see her there that day, either. I went back every damn day for two fucking weeks, figuring I’d run into her somewhere. Anywhere.
And yet, she didn’t pop up at all.
“Dammit,” I murmured.
I flopped down into my chair in my home office and stared at my jam-packed calendar. I had fallen behind so drastically because all I could think about was Lily, and it infuriated me. All I had to do was put her out of my mind and get back to business as usual. How hard was that?
I almost managed to do it, too. After a weekend of hard work, little sleep, and way too much scotch, I finally woke up Monday morning with a clear mind and a goal for my day. I walked into work with my head held high and my schedule ready for the taking. I closed two deals, altered a contract before signing it, and sifted through the past quarter’s earnings before heading out to my favorite deli place for lunch.
And just as I went to place my order, I heard that lilting little voice once more.
“Fancy seeing you here.”
