“She’s got feeling in her extremities.”

A doctor’s voice held me hostage. “I’m going to do a bit of pressing. You tell me how much it hurts on a scale of one to ten. Got it?”

Yuslan squeezed my hand. “You got this, princesa. I’m right here.”

I locked onto his eyes. “Okay, I’m ready.”

When the doctor started pushing down against my abdomen, I prepared myself to start vomiting again. But I didn’t. He pushed, and he bounced, and my pain wasn’t any more than a three or a four—until he pressed in one particular spot.

“Oh, my God,” I groaned.

“Number?” the doctor asked.

I drew in a broken breath. “Seven. At least a seven.”

Someone pulled up my gown and then started smoothing cold, wet things around my body. Tears dripped down the side of my face, and Guadalupe’s beautiful presence came out of nowhere to dab at my tears. Had Jax left me? Abandoned me at the hospital and gone back home?

The thought made me queasy. But I knew him better than that.

“Where is he?” I asked softly.

Guadalupe smiled. “We finally got him out of here to go get some food. The poor guy didn’t eat all night.”

I blinked. “Wait, I’ve been out for an entire—”

“We need to get her started on antibiotics,” the doctor said.

Yuslan’s voice grew strong and protective. “What will that do to the… well, you know?”

I furrowed my brow. “To the what?”

The doctor patted my shin. “We will monitor the baby as best as we can. But right now, she’s got an infection that we need to treat.”

My eyes bulged. “Baby?”

I heard something crash in the hallway before footsteps rushed into the room. Then came growls and grunts as people were shoved out of the way, and hope blossomed in my chest. And as if God Himself had smiled upon me, Jax’s face came into view.

“Oh my God, there you are,” I said breathlessly.

He bent down and captured my lips in a kiss. “I’m so sorry. I just went to get some breakfast. I knew I should’ve stayed.”

I nuzzled his nose with my own. “It’s okay. Just—baby? Did I hear the doctor right?”

He looked up at the doctor. “What’s going on?”

The doctor sighed. “Her incision site is infected. She won’t need aggressive antibiotics, but we’ll need to keep a close eye on things.”

He nodded. “You mean, the baby.”

Holy shit, am I really pregnant?

“Yes,” the doctor said, “I mean the baby.”

Jax looked back down at me. “Once the room clears, you and I are going to talk. Okay? And I’ll answer all of your questions.” He stroked my hair and stared me in the eyes. “Then we can take whatever steps you feel are necessary.”

I swallowed hard. “So, it’s true? I’m—I’m pregnant?”

He tucked my hair behind my ear. “Yes, sweetheart. You’re pregnant.”
