He shrugged. “The universe kept putting us in each other’s path, and I didn’t try to ignore it. My wife does a little bit of office work there in her spare time, so some days I’d go check up on her and see how she was doing. Things just sort of blossomed from there, and eventually, we hired her part-time at our spa so she could have a bit of walking around money during the school year.”
The spa.“You two own the spa I go to all the time.”
The woman smiled. “Yes, we do.”
The man chuckled. “Owned it for years. Started it with our retirement money and never once looked back.”
Guadalupe reached down and took Lily’s hand. “And when Lily offered her services as an accountant, we moved her from working the front desk to helping us with the books.”
I smiled softly. “That’s a beautiful story. Thank you for telling me.”
Yuslan looked up at me. “What is happening to her? Do you know?”
I furrowed my brow. “You didn’t talk to any of the doctors yet?”
Guadalupe sighed. “No, not yet. Yuslan is Lily’s medical emergency contact, so all we got was a phone call saying we needed to get to the hospital as quickly as possible.”
Yuslan started murmuring in Spanish again with his eyes closed, and I caught enough words to know that he was praying. Guadalupe bowed her head and quickly joined him, but when she took my hand, I found myself between a rock and a hard place. Because the news I had for them was not news, I should’ve been giving them.
But, once they were done praying, they both turned to me, their eyes imploring me for answers. So, I drew in a deep breath and took the plunge.
“Lily is pregnant with twins, and one of the pregnancies is ectopic. They had to do surgery to remove the unviable pregnancy as well as her ruptured fallopian tube, and she bled out a bit. They said the next couple of days will be touch and go, so she’ll be here at least for another night or two.”
And the silence that fell over the room could’ve choked someone if they weren’t careful.

Lily
The first thing I heard was the sounds of beeping machines. I hated that noise. I wanted it to go away. Something clamped against my fingertips, and I went to move my hands so I could take it off.
But, my movements started a stampede of feet toward me.
“Lily, my name is Dr. Diego. Can you hear me?”
I tried to swat the voice away. “Jax. Where’s—”
“What do you last remember?”someone asked as they flashed a light in my eyes.
I tried to get away from the harsh source. “I want Jax. Where is he?”
“Ma’am, we need you to stay calm so we can check you out. You’ve been through surgery, and we need to—”
I cleared my throat. “Jax! Please!”
“Mi hija.”
The second I heard Yuslan’s voice, tears rushed my eyes. I felt his hand slide against mine, with his calluses raking against my skin, and I could have sobbed right then and there. While people poked and prodded me, I focused on his expression. I stared at the wonderful, beautiful face that had been such a guiding force for me in my life.
But, I still wanted to know where the hell Jax went.
“Pupil dilation is good.”
“Heart rate is coming down to regular levels.”
“Can you feel this?” someone asked.
I felt a pinprick against my toe, and I jumped. “What was that?”
