Like, her insurance information.
Or her family’s history.
I know nothing about the woman I love.
“You can wait in here, Mr. Levy, and we will get her in here as soon as we’re done with our tests," the nurse said.
I cleared my throat. "You can just call me Jackson. Mr. Levy was my father, and I buried him a couple of weeks ago.”
Her face filled with sympathy. “I lost my father last year. I’m really sorry for what you’re going through. And if there’s anything I can get you while you’re waiting, please don’t hesitate to ask.”
I eyed her carefully. “Am I going to piss someone off if I ask where the cafeteria is so I can get some coffee?”
She leaned in and smiled. “Only this once, but I’ll go get it for you. Have a seat. It’ll be a while before they get her back up here. They’re running a full gamut of tests since they don’t know what they’re working with.”
I nodded. “I appreciate this more than you’ll ever realize.”
But she really wasn’t joking.
With every hour that passed, I sipped the stale coffee I kept refilling and praying to a god I didn’t even believe in that Lily would pull through. I had no idea what the hell had happened, but I hoped that it was something she could recover from.
Because if I lost her as well, I didn’t know if I’d make it.
“Mr. Jackson!” the doctor exclaimed as they rolled Lily into the room. “Sorry to keep you waiting. I wanted to run as many tests as I could so we could get comprehensive answers.”
I rushed to Lily’s side. “She isn’t awake yet. Why isn’t she awake?”
“Because she’s sleeping.”
I peered over my shoulder. “So, she’s not unconscious like we thought?”
He pulled up a chair. “Let’s sit for this conversation, yes?”
I perched on the side of Lily’s bed. “I’m good where I am, thanks.”
Then, he flipped open her file. “So, we did a head CT, and nothing was flagged, so we dug for other reasons as to why her speech slurred. But then, I remembered you mentioned the clammy hands.”
I nodded. “And the cold sweat.”
“Right, yes. Well, after doing a full-body scan and getting some bloodwork back, the answer is actually pretty simple.”
I blinked. “Wait, you already know what’s wrong?”
“Yes, I do. But, let me talk first. Don’t interrupt me until I’m done, and then if you have questions, we can double-back.”
Dread filled my gut. “I’ll do my best.”
He crossed his leg over his knee. “Lily is pregnant.”
The word washed over me like a cold wave in the middle of the night. “She’s—she’s what?” I asked.
He chuckled. “She’s pregnant. With twins, actually. But, one of her pregnancies is ectopic. After she orgasmed the first time, the fetus attached to her fallopian tube ruptured and started moving. Then, when she had her second orgasm, it blew her fallopian tube altogether, and she started bleeding internally. It took us a while to track down, and the bleed was slow, so don’t worry about that.”
I felt the ground beneath my feet pull out from beneath me. “She’s pregnant.”
The doctor nodded. “And while one of the pregnancies isn’t viable, the other one is. The reason it took us so long was that she needed surgery. But, the internal bleed was so small that we were able to go in laparoscopically, cauterize the bleed, and remove her fallopian tube.”
I swallowed hard. “But, but the pregnancy? Isn’t there a, uh, she’s miscarrying, or—”
