“I can—you lul—Jalul—y—uh—”

He tapped my cheek. “Don’t pass out on me. Don’t do that to me, Lily. Please, just stay with me. Open your damn eyes, Lily, come on!”

And the last thing I heard was the fear in his voice as he yelled so loudly it shook my ribcage.

“Someone call 9-1-1! Now! I can’t find my fucking—someone get up here and help me!”

Then, the entire world quickly faded into darkness.

“Sir, can you tell us one more time what happened?”

I hopped off the back of the ambulance as doctors started flinging questions in my direction.

“She’s going to kill me for telling you this, but we were having sex. I was going down on her, and I made her orgasm twice, then she started throwing up and couldn’t stop.”

The doctor grinned. “Some talent you’ve got there.”

I grabbed his arm. “This isn’t funny. She didn’t just start throwing up. She got all clammy, and her speech started to slur before she passed out.”

He stood up while his staff rolled Lily into the hospital. “My apologies, sir, I meant no harm. Sometimes, patients enjoy the jokes during times of crises like this one.”

“Well, I don’t,” I said curtly.

He nodded. “Noted. There isn’t much I can tell you, though, until we run some tests. However, because she’s still unconscious, I’m going to have her admitted. I’ll have a nurse show you to her room.”

I started walking beside him. “I want to be with her. Can I be with her for the tests?”

He shook his head. “No, it’s not protocol.”

“I don’t give a shit about protocol! I want to stay with Lily!”

But, he grabbed the first nurse he could find. “Could you please show this man to a room and let me know where he is? We’re admitting his wife to—”

“She’s not my wife.”

The doctor looked over at me. “We’re admitting his lady-friend immediately. Let me know what room you settle him into.”

I stared the doctor straight in the eyes. “I want the best care you’ve got. Spare no expense. And if you have private rooms, I want her in one.”

The doctor nodded as he walked away. “Make it so, number one!”

And as everyone around him started to giggle, I felt fury wash through my veins.

“That’s the woman I love that you’re mocking!” I bellowed.

The doctor turned around to face me as he stood in the metal doorway that separated us common folk from the rest of the hospital.

“I know,” he said, “and we will do everything we can to make sure she comes out on the other side of this. But, if you’re barking orders, we can’t do our job. So, when you step into this hospital, we’re the ones in charge. Got it?”

I swallowed hard. “Got it.”

“Good. Follow the nurse. She’ll take you to the best room we’ve got. And since our ER is ranked number two in the entire state, you’re in good hands.”

My knee-jerk reaction was to ask him who the hell number one was so we could go there. But, a nurse tugged me along and got us admitted. I fed her all of the information I could about Lily; however, there were still holes in the paperwork that only she could fill out.
