Out of nowhere, though, I heard the man cry out for help before he got slammed against the back of my car.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Jax growled.

The man fumbled around with his words as I whipped around, watching the scene unfold through my back windshield.

“I asked you a question,” Jax exclaimed.

“I-I-I was just trying to find some money! For my kid! She’s so hungry all the time, and I can’t—”

I stepped shakily out of my car. “Sir, if money to feed your kid is what you need—”

“I’ve got this. Just get back inside the car,” he said.

“And I don’t have to listen to you.”

He shot me a look. “Still stubborn, I see.”

I folded my arms over my chest. “Still a dick, I see.”

The would-be robber whimpered. “You’re gonna kill me, aren’t you?”

The way Jax stared at that man put me on alert. I’d never seen that kind of look in anyone’s eye. Well, except for my father before he had pummeled my mother into a bloodied pulp. But, instead of Jax raising his fist, he pulled out his wallet before pulling out a few bills and stuffing it into the man’s pocket.

“Get out of here. Go get some food. And if I catch wind that you’re lying—”

The man shook his head quickly. “I’m not. I’m not. I swear.”

Jax nodded. “Good. Now, get the fuck out of here before I call the cops.”

I watched the man scurry away, and I quickly picked up the contents of my purse. I figured Jax would have walked away, too, but when I stood upright with my purse slipped over my shoulder, he was still hovering about.

Staring me down.

Waiting for me to speak.

“What?” I asked.

His eyes fell down my body. “You okay?”

I cracked my neck. “Yeah, I’m okay. Just a bit shook up is all.”

He nodded, but he didn’t say anything. And he didn’t leave, either.

What does this man want?“That was really nice of you, you know.”

He shrugged. “Life’s hard for some people.”

I searched his face. “Yeah, it is.”

He slid his sunglasses over his face. “Anyway, since I know you won’t thank me—”

I shook my head. “No, I won’t.”

He snickered. “Since you won’t, I hope you have a nice rest of your day.”

I nodded. “You, too.”

I didn’t waste any time getting into my car. I didn’t waste time putting it in reverse. I sure as hell didn’t waste any time backing out of my parking space and easing my way to the exit in order to turn onto Main Street.
