“All right then,” I said with a sigh, “let him know I’m happy to tag along.”

Lily
Doop-Dee-Doo-Dee-Doo-Deedooloo-Dee-Doo—Deep!
I groaned as my phone started ringing, and I slapped my hand against it. Five more minutes was all I needed. But, instead of silencing the alarm so I could roll over and go back to my dream, I heard Jax’s voice.
“Lily? Hello? You there?”
I furrowed my brow. “Jax?”
He chuckled. “Lily, pick up your phone. You answered a video call.”
I scrambled to pick up my phone. “Shit, I-I-I—I mean, shoot. Hi there. Good—good morning.”
His grinning face greeted me as I laid back down in bed. “Hard night’s rest?”
I smoothed my hair out of my face. “Your father was in some pain last night, and I got up to check on him a couple of times.”
His grin faltered. “Is he okay? Did you page the nurse?”
I shook my head. “Not the first time. He just had a hand cramp the first time that I massaged out. But, the second time, I did.”
“Did they up his pain meds again?”
I sighed. “You know they can’t do that anymore. His pain meds are all maxed out.”
He groaned. “Fuck, that’s right.”
I sat up and rolled over onto my stomach. “How’s Shanghai? You sealing the deal over there?”
He nodded. “Yep. Got them to sign and date everything the other night. I swear, doing business over here is like buying a house. I’ll be glad to get back home where everything happens on my dime and not someone else’s.”
I giggled. “Oh, you poor little thing, having to wait for what you want. It must be torture, not being the head honcho of everything, ever.”
He paused. “Are you mocking me?”
I cleared my throat. “Don’t judge me. You woke me up. I haven’t even had caffeine yet.”
“All right, I guess I’ll let it slide this time.”
I smiled softly. “I take it you need help with something if you’re calling?”
He leaned back. “Can’t a guy just call?”
“You mean, can’t a boss just call his secretary and talk? I’m pretty sure that’s not how it works.”
“Right, right. Well, then yes, I do have something I need you to do. Now that the contract is sealed, there’s a lot of paperwork that has to be dealt with before I can start making changes, and I’d like to make a couple of big ones before I leave. Think you can get enough caffeine in your system to sign some things I’m about to send over?”
I sat up and swung my legs over the edge of the bed. “I can even do it from my bed. I’ve got some chocolate-covered espresso beans in my bedside drawer.”
“You like those things?”
I moaned in satisfaction. “They’re amazing. I snack on them first thing in the morning before I attempt to go down these massive stairs you’ve got in your home. I’ll kill myself on them, otherwise.”
He chuckled. “Then, by all means, snack away.”
