He leaned back in his seat. “You’re more than qualified for this job, and it’s amazing how quickly you’ve settled in here. If you still want the position, it’s yours.”
I forgot all about my statement and the fact that he’d told me I was hired at the end of my first day when I’d given him an ultimatum. “Really?”
He nodded. “Really.” He’d misread my tone for thinking I was positively surprised, when in fact, I was just surprised he didn’t remember he’d already given me the job.
I smiled as I stood to my feet. “I love the job. I enjoy it here, despite the hiccups we’ve had regarding our past. For once, I feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be, and—”
He stood to his feet. “Wonderful. I’ll get you the rest of the paperwork you’ll need to fill out, then. But, in the meantime, you can take a look at this?” He reached out of sight before pulling out a manilla folder and held it out to me.
“What is it?”
He shook it at me. “Open it and see.”
I took it from him and flipped it open. “I still don’t understand. What is this?”
He came out from around his desk. “An NDA.”
My eyes snapped up to his. “Do I need to sign one of these when working for you?”
He chuckled. “You already did in the first round of paperwork. This is for a personal assignment I’m leaving you.”
“A… personal assignment, Jax?”
He folded his arms over his chest and perched on the edge of his desk. “I have to travel for business next week, and I have something at my place that I need you to take care of while I’m gone.”
“Andit requires an NDA?”
He nodded. “Yes.”
My eyebrows rose. “Must be something.”
“One, actually. Someone.”
I quirked an eyebrow. “But, you won’t tell me until I sign, right?”
He nodded. “You won’t get paid any more than you are right now, but if you decide to sign the NDA and take on the task, my home office is yours to use for work. You can take up residence in any one of the bedrooms in my place. You’ll even have free rein of my chef while I’m gone.”
I snorted. “Flex much?”
“What was that?”
I shook my head. “Nothing. But, is there anything you can tell me that would help me make a decision as to whether or not I can handle this?”
His eyes searched mine. “Let’s just say that if you don’t take the job, I won’t be traveling because I wouldn’t trust anyone else with this. Ever.”
Fuck.“You got a pen?”
I signed the document as quickly as I could that bound me to secrecy and silence on the matter for the rest of my life. Supposedly, anyway. And while I still wasn’t sure what in the world was requiring me to pack up and live at his place for a week, part of me was very curious as to where Jax lived now.
And how he outfitted his life.
“So, where are you headed? I didn’t schedule a business trip, so I’m assuming this has something to do with the video conference a couple of weeks back?” I asked.
I had hoped that my question would’ve opened up a dialogue about what happened that night. But I should have known he’d find a way to sidestep it. He turned his back to me and started scribbling on a piece of paper. And when he handed the paper to me, he also pulled a set of keys from his pocket.
“These are all of the codes you’ll need for the house. The first one is for the gate out front, the second one is for the alarm code once you get inside, and the third one is for my home office. I keep it locked up so no one can go in there and snoop around without my knowing about it.”
I nodded slowly. “Right, thank you.”
