He stumbled away, almost crashing to the floor as he tried to hop back into his pants. But for me? Well, I just lay there and felt the evidence of our debaucherous deeds drip from between my legs. I heard him talking with the man at the door. I heard him rolling something down the hallway. And as I sat myself up, hopping off the counter to put my clothes back on, he came into the room with a rolling tray of food covered in silver domes. But, his eyes kept sweeping over my body.
“So, uh… food.”
Mike nodded. “Yeah. Food.”
I pointed to the tray after I finished getting dressed. “I got you the steak and potatoes with shrimp scampi on the side.”
He smiled softly. “It’s perfect. Thank you.”
I looked around the room. “So, uh, we should probably get some sleep after—”
Mike nodded. “Yeah, you know. After we eat.”
My gaze met his stare. “Yeah, after we eat.”
He cleared his throat and looked away. “We’ve got a big morning of setting up, too. So, I’ll order some breakfast to-go in the morning.”
I walked over to the rolling tray and gathered my food. “Sounds good. Surprise me.”
He chuckled. “I can do that.”
Yes, you can.“Anyway, I’m just going to head to my bedroom. I’m going to eat a bit and pass out.”
“Sure you don’t want to eat together at the table?”
I shook my head as I walked away. “No, no! I’m good, I promise. I’m just going to nibble, then go to sleep. I’ll see you in the morning!”
“But, Mags, don’t you think we should—”
“Night, Mike!”
I sighed with relief as I pressed my back against my bedroom door. I slid down it until my ass hit the floor, then I set my food off to the side. I dug the heels of my hands into my eyes, trying to push what had just happened out of my mind. I didn’t want to consider what all it might translate into while we were on a work trip to Vegas, of all places.
“Mags?” Mike knocked on my door, and I sighed.
“Yeah?”
“Are you okay?”
No, I’m not okay. I just slept with a man more than fifteen years older than me that wiped my ass as a child. No, I amnotokay.
“Yeah, I’m good. Just tired,” I said. The yawn that bubbled up my throat added to the lie, and I heard Mike sigh behind the door.
“Well, if you need anything, you know where to find me.”
I nodded. “I do, yes.”
“Well, I guess I’ll be going.”
I closed my eyes. “See you in the morning.”
He paused. “Yeah. See you.” But instead of walking away like I figured it would have, he cleared his throat instead. “Actually, there’s something I’d like to say. If you don’t mind.”
I swallowed down my groan as I reached for the silver dome that covered my burger. “Sure, go ahead.”
He drew in a deep breath. “I just want to say that I’m sorry if you felt disrespected by what just happened or somehow forced into it. I never thought something like that would take place between us, and the moment simply came around, and I went with my gut and—”
I shook my head. “I wasn’t forced into anything, Michael. I promise.”
