“Oh, boy,” I murmured.
Still, I walked over to his desk and sat down. I lost myself in the rhythm that came with organizing those files and papers. Then, I had to start pulling open drawers from here to kingdom come to figure out where in the world they went. I picked up books off the floor and slid them back into their place on the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. I reorganized some of his drawers so the files would run in alphabetical order, making it easier to find things, and just as I slipped the last file into place, a knock came at the door.
“Come in,” I called out.
Mike opened the door, and the smell of food wafted up my nostrils. “Holy shit, Mags.”
I closed the filing cabinet and turned around. “Is that for me?”
He mindlessly held out the bowl as his eyes danced around his office. “You… cleaned it.”
I walked over and took the food from him. “Not just cleaned it, I organized it. I put everything away, I reorganized all of your file drawers, so things run in alphabetical order, and I managed to do a little dusting along the way.”
He shook his head slowly. “Holy shit, Mags.”
Pride filled my chest as I took a bite of the roast, and the meat melted against my tongue. “Holy shit, Mike.”
He barked with laughter. “That good, huh?”
I took another massive bite as I walked out of his office. “I hope there’s more for seconds because I’m going to want some.”
I made my way back into the kitchen and topped my massive bowl off with more vegetables and broth before I made my way out back. Mike had this beautiful patio set up and looked out over the glorious expanse of his pool, his hot tub, and a garden that I would always envy. I drew in a deep breath and smelled the ripened tomatoes finally begging to be picked. I eased myself onto a comfortable lounger before I heard footsteps behind me, then the clinking of a glass full of water touched down against the small table between the two loungers before Mike straddled and sat on the empty one.
“I know my office seems intimidating right now, but I promise you’ll get there,” he said.
I snickered. “I swear, sometimes it’s like you can read my mind.”
He took a big bite of his food and swallowed. “Remember, I sat where you’re sitting right now, with my father handing me businesses I never thought I’d get and in conditions that I never thought I’d have to deal with. And if I can do it, you can do it.”
Relief rushed through me. “That helps, thank you.”
“No thanks necessary.”
I reached for my water. “So, how often do you take these business trips you’re going to be funding?”
He chuckled. “Already itching to get out of here?”
I shrugged. “Just want to be ready in case you travel frequently. If you have any sort of a traveling schedule, I could coordinate it with my work at the spa and get the time off. Or, at least as much of it as possible.”
“Well, I do have to be in Vegas in a couple of weeks for Small-Town Delight.”
I paused. “What’s that?”
“It’s something I came up with at the end of last year. I always hear people in bigger cities talking about how carefree and wonderful the small-town life must be, and I figured that we have conferences and business meetings over every little thing possible in just about any industry, so why can’t we have one centered around small-town living?”
“So… it’s a conference?”
He snickered. “Not exactly. The gist of it is this: the businesses I own get an all-expenses-paid weekend to Vegas to set up booths disguised as little shops and houses. Then, people can pay a sum of money to come in, enjoy what there is to offer, donate money if they can to the respective businesses, and generally experience small-town life without actually living in a small town.”
I blinked. “That’s… pretty brilliant.”
He smiled. “I thought so myself. It’s taken a while to get it up and running, but our first-annual event is happening in a couple of weeks. And after seeing how you organized my office in less than a couple of hours, I could use my assistant and her organizational skills to keep that weekend from completely going off the rails.”
I didn’t hesitate. “This is what I signed up for. I’d be happy to come along.”
He nodded. “Great. It’s being held throughout the weekend, so you shouldn’t have to take off work. Though, you might have to take a half-day on that Friday since our flight into Vegas will leave around two in the afternoon.”
I sipped my water and nodded. “Sounds good to me. And if something happens and I need that entire Friday off, just let me know. I can take a sick day or something.”
