A very panicked manager rushed up to us. “We need help restocking. I’m so sorry, I know I said I had this under control, but we got so bombarded that we just—”
I stopped his panic in its tracks. “Show me where you need me. I can help restock.”
His eyes filled with gratitude. “Thank you so much. Maggie?”
“What can I do?” she asked.
“We’ve still got people coming in to buy things. If you could open up another register—”
She held up her hand. “Done. I’ve got it.”
I kissed her cheek softly before we went our separate ways, and together, the blue-mohawked manager and I started ripping open boxes in the back room. It had been a while since I had stocked shelves for any business, but it came rushing back to me as if I had done it merely yesterday. People flooded in at random points and cleared the shelves just as quickly as we kept them stocked, and by the time the crowd died down for good, we had gone through everything on the shelves as well as a third of the stock back in the storeroom.
“Guess I’ll be doing some ordering before I clock out,” the manager murmured.
I chuckled. “Just make sure you clock your hours for it. Maggie will have your ass if you don’t.”
“Michael!” she called out.
I dropped the box I had in my hands and went running. “Maggie! What is it? Are you okay?”
She looked up from her sandwich, her mouth half-full as a piece of pickle dangled from her lips. “Want your sandwich?”
I sighed with relief. “You can’t yell for me like that. It freaks me out.”
She swallowed her food down quickly. “So, you want me to call your phone every time I need you?”
The staff giggled around us as I walked up to her and pecked her lips. I slipped behind the check-out counter and stood beside her, opening my to-go box before I took a bite of my food. We ate what we could before another wave of people trickled in, then I kissed her quickly before I got back to work. And the entire time, I kept thinking about how my life had changed so drastically.
If someone had told me seven months ago that I’d accidentally marry some girl I used to babysit, and she’d become pregnant with my child, and we’d live happily ever after, I would have asked them what they were smoking and if I could have some. But, as I stocked the shelves and watched Maggie smile at all of the patrons who came out to support her, I couldn’t envision my life any other way. Maggie was perfect for me. We were made for each other. And in a few months’ time, we’d have a family. We’d have the sound of baby giggles filling an estate that had once stayed muted and cloaked away from the world.
I had no idea what I had done to deserve such perfection and beauty in my life. But I knew I’d do whatever it took to make sure I never lost it, no matter what it cost me in the end.
“And that’s a wrap for today!” Maggie exclaimed.
The last customer walked out of the shop, and the manager quickly rushed over to lock the door. He sighed as he turned around, leaning against the door like he had just gotten done running a marathon. It had been a long time since my feet had hurt like this, and the look of relief on the staff’s faces made me grin.
But, the look of pride on Maggie’s face made me smile.
“Joshua?”
The guy with the mohawk answered. “Yes, ma’am?”
Maggie closed down her register. “Make sure you staff yourself these next couple of weeks like you’ll have this kind of a crowd every day. And then we can adjust, as necessary.”
Joshua sighed with relief. “I can definitely do that.”
Then, she looked over at me, and her eyes began to twinkle. “Thank you for your help.”
I shook my head. “No thanks necessary. We’re in this together.”
“Forever?”
I walked over to her from across the small boutique and scooped her into my arms before my lips crashed against hers. I heard the staff cooing and squealing softly to themselves as our tongues tangled together. I wanted to get her home. I needed to get her home. I needed to get her beneath my body and show her exactly how much I adored her, how much I loved her, how awe-inspiring she had become to me.
“I love you so much,” I whispered against her lips.
And as her hands settled against my chest, she placed her head against my shoulder. “I love you, too, Michael. So very, very much.”
