“What happened?” I asked.
I finally looked up to gaze around the room, but none of the girls surrounding me spoke. They simply looked at one another, like they weren’t sure which one wanted to break the news to me.
“Just say it. I need to know what’s wrong,” I said.
Then, Maggie started shifting. “Ouch.”
My attention went right back to her, and I bent my lips down to her ear. “Maggie, it’s me.”
She grunted as she tried to move, but she didn’t speak.
“Maggie, it’s Mike. All I need you to do is open your eyes, okay? Open your eyes for me, beautiful.”
She parted her lips to speak, but all she did was mumble.
So, I squeezed her hand and doubled down on my request. “Don’t speak. Just listen to the sound of my voice, beautiful. I need you to open your eyes. I can do the rest.Wecan do the rest. Just open your eyes and look at me, okay?”
“She’s been out for an hour now.”
The male voice caught my attention, and my head peered over my shoulder. “Doctor, what’s going on?”
The man clutched his clipboard in front of him. “My current diagnosis is that she’s in shock. She came in unconscious about forty minutes ago.”
I furrowed my brow. “I thought you said she had been out for an hour.”
Then, Guadalupe finally slipped in with some answers. “She passed out at work. It took the ambulance a bit of time to get to us. She’s been out ever since she collapsed.”
I clenched my jaw. “Well, did she hit her head? Is that why she’s still not awake yet?”
The doctor shook his head. “We’ve got some tests percolating, but she doesn’t have a concussion or anything.”
A girl perched in the corner finally stepped to the forefront. “I caught her before she went down.”
I swallowed hard. “I’m sorry I don’t know your name. But thank you.”
She nodded. “Margo, and it’s not a problem. She’s family, and it’s what we do for family.”
My gaze gravitated back to her pale face. “Come on, Maggie. Just wake up for me. That’s all I need. I can do the rest. I can take care of the rest. Just… just wake up, all right, beautiful?”
The doctor came and stood at my side. “Is he the man you two are talking about?”
I whipped my head up. “What man?”
And when the girls didn’t answer, I glared at them both.
“What. Man?” I asked hotly.
Margo sighed. “Yeah, he’s the man.”
The doctor put his hand on my shoulder. “I still think she fainted out of shock, and you need to know why.”
And something in the pit of my gut clicked over as if Maggie and I were in sync even when she was sleeping.
“She’s pregnant, isn’t she?” I asked.
The girls stayed silent, but the doctor nodded his head. “I ran the test twice. She’s definitely pregnant.”
My entire world came to a grinding halt as my stare slowly made its way back to Maggie’s face. I leaned forward, pressing my forehead against hers as I breathed the air that rhythmically fell from her lips. I nuzzled her nose softly, allowing our fingers to link together, even though her body was still limp. And as I closed my eyes, I whispered a prayer up to God.
