Her eyes widened as she nodded quickly, so I slipped my palm from her lips. However, the shock that rolled behind her eyes didn’t dissipate.

“You need a what now?” she hissed.

I sighed. “You know I can’t go out and do anything right now without someone snapping a picture somewhere. It’s not as bad as it once was, but it’s still happening. And if someone sees me buying a—”

She waved her hand around in the air. “All right, all right, all right, I’ll do it. You want some water or something, too?”

I threw my arms around her neck. “You’re a lifesaver. Thank you so much.”

“Do you want water or not?”

I released her quickly and nodded. “Yes, please.”

“Any particular kind?”

I shrugged. “I guess that Fuji water if I get a choice.”

She grinned. “Love that water.”

“Right? It’s like drinking silk. I didn’t even think that was possible.”

The two of us giggled for a little bit before Margo’s face grew serious. “How late are you?”

I chewed on the inside of my cheek. “I’m so far out from when I was supposed to start my last period that I could have technically skipped it. At this point, I don’t even know.”

“Jesus.”

“I’m not experiencing any symptoms, though. I’m not sick, I’m not overly exhausted, my boobs don’t hurt or anything.”

She nodded. “So, it could just be the stress you’ve been under lately.”

I nodded along with her. “Yeah, it could totally be that.”

We stared at each other for a few seconds before she licked her lips. “I’ll be back in twenty.”

I clasped my hands together. “You’re a lifesaver; that’s what you are.”

Margo rushed off to run my errand for me while I hung back in the lounge. I had no hope of working or focusing on anything until I took this test, so I prayed that Guadalupe didn’t come looking for me. I ran my fingers through my hair and paced all around the room. I started drinking tap water to try to get my bladder going while I simultaneously prayed to God that if he was toying with me to show me why.

I had too much on my plate to add something like this.

“All right,” Margo said as she burst through the lounge door, “I got what you needed along with some snacks.”

I furrowed my brow. “Snacks?”

She nodded. “Either they’re celebratory snacks or rehab snacks.”

I sighed. “Right, right.”

She pulled out the bottle of water and a box full of tests before shoving them at me. “Well, the bathroom’s right behind you. Go!”

“Yes, right. Okay. Give me a few minutes.”

I surged into the restroom and locked the door behind me, watching as Margo’s shadow hovered in front of the door. Bless that woman, even if she was rough and jagged around the edges. I cracked open the bottle of water and chugged it down while dancing around, hoping to jiggle some urine into my bladder so I could pee on these damn sticks—I had every intention of using all three tests in the box.

“There we go; now we’re talkin’,” I murmured.

All of a sudden, my bladder was dying to empty itself. So, I sat my anxious ass down onto the toilet and peed on all three of those sticks. I sat them on the floor, staring at them endlessly as I wiped and cleaned myself up. Then, I picked them all up and set them on the edge of the sink while I washed my hands in the other one.
