A soft smile crept across my face as relief rushed its way through my veins. I’d never had someone stand up for me in such a way, especially so publicly. So, I turned my phone screen off and tossed it onto the coffee table. There was no need to occupy myself with all of this drama until I could get home and do something about it. But, I didn’t even get my ass back to the couch cushions before my phone started vibrating yet again.

“Oh, come on. What is it—oh?”

Someone was calling from the salon, so I picked up the phone call. “Hello?”

And when Guadalupe’s voice sounded, I almost cried with relief. “You girls really know how to get yourself into some situations,si?”

I giggled breathlessly before gasping for air. “Hey there.”

“Are you sad? Or is something else happening?”

I leaned heavily against the couch cushions. “Sad isn’t really the word, no.”

“Then, what is the word?”

I clapped my hand against my forehead. “I honestly have no clue, Guadalupe.”

She hummed. “Hmmm. So, you’re not happy?”

“I mean, I suppose this could have happened with a worse man, sure.”

“And you’re not afraid?”

I shook my head. “No. If there’s one thing Mike doesn’t do, it’s make me afraid.”

“Good. Because if you were afraid, I’d be sending you money to catch the next flight home.”

“I love you so much. I miss you guys, too.”

“We miss you as well. And we’re worried about you. You two are all over the news.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, yeah. I know.”

“Was it a real ceremony?”

I sat up. “See, that’s the thing. It was made very clear, at least to me, that it wasn’t. We were just test-running things to try to drum up interest. The poor magistrate had been standing out there all damn day without so much as one person going up to him. So, we figured that putting on a bit of a show would get people to come over and satiate their curiosity.”

“But, he actually married you two.”

I shrugged. “I really don’t know. I didn’t think so. But, we both woke up this morning to a certificate of marriage, the magistrate asking if we wanted a copy of our wedding ceremony, and now it’s all of this. I still don’t have a damn clue as to what’s happened!”

“All right, all right. Take some breaths for me like I taught you. Close your eyes and in through your nose and let it out through your mouth on a four-count as you open your eyes.”

I followed her breathing instructions as she did some deep-breathing techniques with me. Gee had gotten into yoga lately, so she had become this sort of pseudo-expert in breathing techniques to help people relax. And while the exercises didn’t provide any of the answers I needed, it helped me relax. Which felt wonderful, considering the circumstances.

“How do you feel now?” she asked.

I yawned. “Tired.”

“That’s good. You need the rest. Go get some sleep, but just remember what I’ve always told you girls, okay?”

“Hmm? What’s that?”

She giggled. “I’ll give you a pass since it sounds like you’re half asleep. Just remember that youralto, oscuro, y guapocomes when you least expect it. Always. So, critical of many, trusting of your heart, and open to all.”

I nodded listlessly. “I promise.”

“Good girl. Now, get some rest. I love you.”
