Stormy and Sable peed quickly, but River was taking his damn time about finding theperfectspot. He wasn’t yet in the habit of lifting his leg—something I definitely planned to ask Noah about—so he squatted just like Sable. Tonight? Three times he came super close but then, at the last minute, changed his mind. “Come on, pee already.”

Stormy gazed up at me as if to say, what can you do about these crazy puppies?I’d discovered early on that she did pee on command—which was greatly appreciated. She’d also done a damn good job babysitting as everyone had been excited when we got home, but not in a panicked way. I’d asked Noah what he thought about us getting a nanny camera and he’d grinned. Said he would pick one up the next time he went to the pet store.

Finally, River squatted and peed his little heart out. He was all grins as I led them back inside.

Noah was there with tiny pieces of baby carrots for them.

All three munched away happily.

He moved into my space.

Our gazes met.

“It’s been a lovely night—and we’re not dating—but can I kiss you?”

My heart stuttered before restarting at a much faster rhythm. I’d only been fantasizing about this moment for oh, a dozen years. “Uh, yeah, that would be okay. I mean, that would be nice. I mean, you know, whatever you want to—”

He went up on his toes and pressed his lips to mine.

I angled my head down so that he could put his feet flat on the floor again. I wrapped my arms around his waist even as he threaded his hands around my neck and tugged me closer. His mouth was insistent against mine, and I opened for him. He thrust his tongue into my mouth, and I tasted mint toothpaste.Oh God, he had this planned out. Probably a good thing it took the dog so long to pee. Go River!Wait. The man you love is finally kissing you and all you can think about is your dog? Are you nuts?

Quite possibly.

No, I’d say probably.

I was also sinking further into the glorious sensation of being held so tightly. He might just have his arms around my neck, but he plastered himself against me and, after a moment, I realized his erection was pressing insistently against my hip.Well, we’ll just have to do something about that.I was about to offer a blow job when he pulled back.

“We’re not dating…but I was wondering if you want a tour of my bedroom, and we can take things further?”

Interesting. I’ve seen his bedroom. I’ve slept in his…oh damn. Damn, damn, damn.I cleared my throat. “Further would be completely acceptable.”

He grasped my hand and clicked his tongue.

Three puppies gazed up at him.

“Upstairs.” He met Stormy’s gaze. “My room.”

She woofed and headed out.

River and Sable followed her. They almost always followed her.Helpful that she’s a good dog and not leading them astray.Anything was possible in the future, of course, but for now, she made a great older sister.

Noah tugged on my hand, then flipped off the kitchen light as we passed the entrance. He didn’t look back as he said, “I’m not sure you should be so trusting.”

“If you’re a serial killer, Noah, I figure you’d have offed me long before now.” I said the words in jest, but I understood what he was saying.

Don’t fall in love with me—I’m a bad bet.

Except he wasn’t. He was a great bet. He was loyal and honest and would take care of me in a way no one ever had.

Still, when we arrived at the entrance to his bedroom, he hesitated.

I turned him to face me. “What?”

“I’m nervous.”

“Okay.” I held his gaze. “Why?”
