He hovered on the edge of climax himself as he continued to caress her while intense shudders wracked her.

He gradually gentled his touch, sensing her beginning to descend from the storm of pleasure that he had given her.

Chris moved back up over her body, and kissed her long and deep, his throbbing, unsatisfied erection trapped between them.

"So, did you like that?" he asked, smugly.

She laughed shakily. “Like you even need to ask that! But on a scale of one to ten, that was definitely a ‘wow!’”

He chuckled, feeling smug and she drew him down to cuddle, while her breathing and heart rate slowed.

“Your turn,” she announced after a few minutes. “What would you like me to do?”

He rolled away from her. “Surprise me.”

To his delight, she spent some time kissing and stroking his body, trying to figure out what he liked, then opened his pants and gifted him with an enthusiastic blowjob, executed with more confidence than her initial attempt.

It felt really fucking amazing…and like before, she seemed happy to swallow at the end. She really was a natural at this.

More cuddling followed as they both relaxed in the afterglow. It felt good to just lie there with her draped over him, covered in her scent, and her warm breath tickling the skin of his chest as she pillowed her head in the hollow of his shoulder.

“So, um, I was wondering,” she said, after a while. “Why is going all the way off the table? I mean, doing other stuff with you has been really good, but I’m ready for more.”

Uh-oh. With an effort, Chris forced his thoughts out of the warm golden syrup of satisfaction, and tried to figure out a way to tell her the truth without revealing too much.

When in doubt, son, keep it simple. His dad’s advice echoed in his thoughts.

“I want you, I really do,” he assured her. “But it’s a shifter thing. I, uh, can’t go all the way with someone who isn’t my mate.”

She looked surprised. “So, you’re technically a virgin, too?”

Crap. He couldn’t lie to her—but he couldn’t tell her the whole truth, either. Not until he figured things out. And he realized that he really needed to talk to Matt about this sudden change in his cat’s intentions towards Sophie, and the fact that Chris’s intentions to keep this strictly FWB had just gone down the drain.

Fuck, fuckity, fuck.

“Uh, no. Not exactly. But there’s some…stuff…going on right now with me.” He forced himself to smile at her. “It’s not you, it’s me.”

“Where have I heardthatbefore?” she said, rolling her eyes. “Okay.” She paused. “Thanks for being honest with me.”

If you only knew, he thought.

He needed to figure things out, and fast. Before this blew up his friendship with both Matt and Sophie for good.

Chapter Eighteen

Bearpaw Ridge

Friday, June 15

“So, how's your ghost research project going?” Matt asked, as he and Sophie strolled hand-in-hand down Main Street.

As part of their second date, they were heading to dinner before the movie started.

This week’s classic film feature from the Golden Age of Hollywood wasThe Philadelphia Story, an award-winning romantic comedy about a woman being courted by two men, one her ex-husband and the other a tabloid reporter.

Sophie thought that the selection was hilariously appropriate, considering her current situation.

“Well, I’ve kind of had other things on my mind this week,” she answered, with a wry smile. “But Chris reported that something did happen at Calidus last night.”
