“I have a wife and three sons living here.Will he go after them as well?” Marco wanted to know.
“What would you do?”Leon asked.“To Gianno, your sons are a threat to his ambitions.They could rightfully step up if you’re dead and he wouldn’t want anyone to challenge his right to be in the seat of power.”Leon warned him.
Marco went silent for a moment then he said, “He is actually serious?He would come after me and my family to ensure they would be absent in claiming he was my father’s rightful heir?”
Leon felt disgusted.This man was already warned and yet he did not heed that.He just now seemed to take this threat seriously.“Si, he is serious.He wants us both dead before he gets out so he can claim his place.Do you believe me now?”
“Si, I believe you,” Marco finally admitted.“But I hate that it's come to this point.”
“I’m not happy about it either because this has made me realize he intended to kill me all along.I just don’t know why?”
Marco snorted.“He was always jealous of you.You had the strength of conviction that he never had.Our father spoiled him rotten to get him ready to take over for him.But Gianno lacked the conviction he saw in you.He would have made a terrible leader of men.I think he knew it too.The woman that night was nothing but an excuse to cover your murder.Then instead of you getting killed, he shot Sal.”Marco went quiet for a moment then he exclaimed, “Wait a minute, no he didn’t kill Sal by mistake.Sal always told me he would stop Gianno from turning what our father built up into a clown show.Gianno must have overheard him say it.He killed Sal to stop him from telling our father Gianno’s true motives.Dannazione...Damn it.He had this planned for years.”
Leon didn’t really feel surprised.It all made sense actually.It had always been about Giovanni taking over.Always been about power.Of course.Money and power.The usual suspects.“Si and he knows this is his last chance to get what he wants, a position of power in the Family.”Leon growled.“If he comes here, he won’t win and now that you acknowledge his claim is real, I hope you live through this.”
“Si, I will survive this as well,” Marco acknowledged.“Beh dannazione, I still cannot believe he’s serious but I will not allow him to just murder me or my family.I may not have wanted this position but now I see the truth and I will not fall.I have to get ready for this attack.Thank you for making me see the truth when you didn’t have to.”
After Leon ended the call, he sat there for a moment before he got up and left.He again went looking for John.He found him in the security room with Calderone.
John looked up and nodded.“I was just about to come looking for you.”
“Ok, what is happening?”
“Gianno’s friends just showed up,” Calderone explained.“There are three of them.
“And Stephano is drinking again,” John added with a sneer.
Leon nodded.“That sounds about right.Do you know who the men are yet?”
“Yeah, John ran their records,” Calderone explained.“One of them is Randal Kerry, a vicious thug that did several stretches of time purely for his brutality.Seems it’s a constant pastime of his to beat on rather helpless people at different times in his life.One of the people he went to jail for injuring was his own father.Another was a veteran whose house he broke into because rumor had it he had cash in his house and the third was an old woman.He broke into her home as well for money but she didn’t have much, so he left her in a coma for six years.Not the best of men for sure.”
John nodded as he took over the list, “The second man is Gerry Smalts, another winner.He only went to jail once but that was for manslaughter.He got drunk one night and got behind the wheel of his car and ran a family off the road.The dad was killed when his car hit a tree and the pregnant woman in the car lost her child.He served fifteen years for the death of the husband and the child.The third man, Andrew Hills, was his cell mate for five years.He was in prison for attempted murder of his ex-wife.The trial said they were on vacation and hiking in the hills when he threw her off a cliff.He only married her for the money but she survived.She’s in a wheelchair for the rest of her life but she lived.”
Leon shook his head.“And these are the men he promised positions in his Family?The Council would never accept that.Believe it or not there are qualifications and one would be to have no prison record.”
Calderone shook his head.“Maybe he was hoping we would kill one or more of them, so he wouldn’t have to honor his promises.”
Leon nodded.“You could be right about that, son.”He paused for a moment then said, “Let's get ready for the coming battle then.”
Calderone nodded as he opened his jacket and showed his dad his double pistols.
Leon shook his head.“Son, you shouldn’t be out in front of the men.”
Calderone glared at him.“They are coming here to where my family is.I don’t care about the power grab.If he comes to my house, he’s dead.”
John nodded his head firmly and smiled at Leon.“Yeah, what he said.”
Leon shook his head.“Ok...I’ll go and speak to Rowen and Calli.I can’t hide this from them.”
