Half an hour later, the five of them left and made their way to Conrad’s compound close to Tupper Lake.They arrived just after dark.They stood a small distance away from the cement walls and studied the structure for a few moments.
“It’s not a new structure,” Cassian told them as they studied the building with binoculars.“But whatever is behind those walls is well guarded.”
“There is one man walking the perimeter and the walls are electrified,” Faith told them.
Lancelot snapped his head up to stare at her.“How do you know that?”
Faith looked at him and said quietly, “I can hear the hum of the generator that’s running the fence line.”She looked back at the compound and ignored the men’s stunned looks.
The men were confused, well all but Cassian.They were still discovering all her additional powers but enhanced hearing and eyesight was two of them.
“We’re half a mile away.Can she really hear the hum of a generator that far away?”Calegis asked.
Cassian nodded.“Yes, she can.”
Lancelot paused for a moment then asked, “What else can you hear or see that we can’t at the moment?”
“There are four men walking around,” she replied.“But I can hear another man in one of the houses.And he’s not alone, he has a dog with him.”She looked at them and said, “I think he’s being guarded but I’m not sure why.”
Lancelot looked at his fellow Knights and said, “Then he’s who we’re here to talk to.But how do we get inside and avoid the other four men?”
Faith grinned.“Why don’t you leave that to me?”
Lancelot looked at the others then at Cassian and at his nod, he slowly agreed.“Let’s get closer and we can help if you run into trouble.”
Faith snorted softly.“Yeah, you do that.Just don’t get in my way, ok?”Then she turned and strode toward the compound.Her steps were quick and quiet.Soon, she was ahead of the men.They were way behind her by the time she reached the outside and began walking around the perimeter.
By the time the men got close enough to see everything, she was around the corner and they weren’t sure where she was.They had to stay in the shadows so as not to give their presence away.
After a few minutes, Lancelot seemed to get nervous.“Where the hell is she?If she gets hurt, Bane will tear us apart.”
“Give her a minute,” Cassian assured them.
Then the heavy iron gate slowly opened.
Lancelot turned swiftly with his weapon held in the firing position.
Faith poked her head out and looked around.“It’s safe to come inside now.The guards are taken care of,” she called out softly.
Lancelot, Calegis and Palamedes paused at her announcement.
Cassian simply stood from his defensive crouch and walked out in the open, toward the gate.
They slowly followed him.When they reached the open area and stepped inside the gate, they all looked around carefully.
Lancelot gasped when he saw four men all laid out on the ground nearby.They were unconscious and tied up but there was no sign of a fight or a battle.
“What the hell?”Calegis exclaimed.
Lancelot nodded.“How the hell did you do this so fast?”
Faith looked at them and said, “You may not be aware of this but I was on the wrong side of an experiment gone very wrong.Conrad Winters paid for a serum that would change a person into the ultimate fighter.Only we were supposed to get the serum for three years but Dr.Ezra Warrens gave me the serum for seven.It enhanced the powers I was given.Winters also took the serum and it enhanced his strength but he didn’t realize that I was all that much more than he was.I defeated him and now it's time to take down his empire.”
Lancelot and the knights all stared at her.“Then let's fan out and find what he’s trying so hard to hide here.”Lancelot growled as he gripped his gun a little tighter.
Faith closed her eyes and listened for a moment then turned to the small house in the corner of the compound.She pointed at it and whispered, “I think he’s over there.”
They all approached the small building.Then they spread out and tried to get a look inside.They found an older man sitting there, watching television with a dog at his feet.
