He leaned down to get a better look.

If he had to guess, these boot prints matched the one he’d seen in Morgan’s cabin.

He’d been here.

He’d been close.

Logan’s jaw hardened.

This guy was playing a dangerous game, and Logan didn’t like it.

After forensic techs had come to look for evidence and Morgan’s car had been taken as evidence, Duke and Andi had insisted Logan take the time to eat.

Now that he thought about it, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d eaten. He knew his friends were right. He did need some food in his system if he wanted to keep up his strength and energy.

They went to a place Duke had eaten at before—Susie’s Diner. They were seated and ordered soon after. Logan got a club sandwich, Duke a burger and fries, and Andi a grilled chicken salad.

“So who do you suspect could be behind this?” Duke started before taking a long sip of his water.

Logan rubbed his jaw. How deep did he want to get into this? How much did he want to share?

At this point, he had nothing to lose. The information about his past that he kept so carefully guarded now seemed unimportant.

Except it might be important.

Important when it came to finding Morgan. He was tired of hiding the truth. No more, he determined. No more.

“It could be someone with the state trooper’s office who’s mad at me for bringing down Captain Durden,” he started. “Plenty of people want payback for what they consider an injustice. It wouldn’t have been hard for someone there to figure out my relationship with Morgan.”

“Anyone in particular you’re thinking about?” Andi asked.

He pressed his lips together before saying, “Ashcroft.”

CHAPTER

FIFTEEN

“Ashcroft?”Duke’d eyes widened. “Your new captain?”

“That man has it out for me,” Logan said. “He really hates me. Enough to do all this? Doubtful. But I’ve also learned to keep an open mind.”

“Open minds are essential,” Andi said. “Is there anyone else?”

Logan swallowed before sharing the next part. “I also went undercover in a biker gang in Denver just over five years ago. I got in deep. Brought a lot of people down. Made a lot of people mad.”

Surprise flashed in Andi’s and Duke’s gazes.

“So you think someone affiliated with this gang found you here, and then realized you were connected to Morgan?” Andi squinted as if mentally calculating possible scenarios.

“Maybe. Morgan’s brother was also in the gang.” His stomach tightened before he said the next part. “They killed him.”

He looked at Andi and Duke and saw the realizations in their eyes. Saw how they were putting the pieces together.

It would have only been a matter of time before they found out these things about him. He wished he could bury some ofthose details from his past forever. That he could turn back time. Rewrite history.

Unfortunately, that was a luxury he didn’t have.

“Okay.” Andi played with her paper straw wrapper, winding it in her fingers. “So maybe a state trooper is responsible. Or it could be someone with this biker gang. Anybody else?”
