Chapter Seven

Abra

“Girlfriend, that boy is adorable! Just where did you say you found him?”

Stevie was so much fun. We’d only met a few months ago, but she was already a close friend. She just had that effect on people. And I really admired how she could be so open and loving with someone after all she’d been through. Her ex didn’t want the baby she was carrying and kicked her out at eight months pregnant. The stress led to the baby being stillborn. Despite all of that, she was so positive. She was a ray of frickin’ sunshine to my snarky ass.

“On the side of the road. Literally. It was really bad, Stevie. I’m used to seeing fights and shit, but this was fucking scary. He’s lucky he’s alive.” I shuddered when I thought about what Kelly had been through. He must be really tough to have been attacked like that and still be up and moving around. I would’ve taken to bed, but he was like a machine. He just kept going.

My mind had been full of all kinds of thoughts about just what it meant that I found him. Did it mean something? I didn’t believe in coincidences, and the more time I spent with him…

“I don’t know. I feel like it all happened for a reason. Like he’s supposed to be in my life. Does that sound weird?”

Stevie hugged me, which might seem odd while in line for the bathroom, but all kinds of issues can get solved in a women’s room. We’re just like that.

“Remember who you are asking, Abey Baby! I am the first person to admit that things happen for a reason. Look at everything that Aaron and I went through.”

The fact that she could even love again after her ex-boyfriend basically abandoned her. What an ass! But McShane showed up like a knight in shiny fucking armor…

I sighed. “I so love the two of you together. Are you really going to make babies soon? For reals? Can I be Auntie Abey?”

Stevie laughed and hugged me tight again, kissing my cheek.

“Absolutely! Omigosh, that would be so cool! I can’t wait.” She sobered a little. “I wish my Nancy were here, that’s all. I know she’s in a good place, and I know…” She started to tear up and her breathing got shaky.

We’d been there before, me and her. She almost didn’t let things happen with McShane because she was having a hard time dealing with the loss of her child. She’d been through therapy and she and I had talked a lot. Thankfully McShane was a patient man, and when his life went to hell, he stood by her side. Theirs was definitely a love that could transcend the bullshit. I took her hands in mine and made her look at me.

“Stevie, honey, take a deep breath and say, ‘Abey Baby, I am where I need to be, with whom I need to be, and doing what I need to do.’”

She smiled bashfully at me and repeated my words.

“And if you come to a point where one of those is no longer true, then we talk, got it?”

“Got it. You’re always able to talk me down from the ledge. I don’t know how you do it!Now, your cop out there… ”

“See, evenyouare calling him my cop!I’mcalling him my cop, and dammit, I probably shouldn’t. He’s a farm boy. He’s totally innocent. I don’t know that I could live with myself if I corrupted him.”

Stevie raised an eyebrow and licked her lips. “I bet you could. I don’t see him saying no, Abey.”

It was my turn for the bashful smile. “I’m going to have fun, dammit. We’ll see what happens. We’re just so different, I don’t know if we could get past that when we’re back in the real world. For now, it’s playtime.”

“And you better play with that! Mmm mmm mmmmm!”

We laughed as we finally reached the stalls. We split off to do our thing and met back up at the towels. I took a look in the mirror and snorted at the goofy smile on my face. Kelly had put it there and it actually didn’t look too bad on me. One of my braids was coming undone, so I took it out and reworked it. I put on a little lip balm with sunscreen and took Stevie’s hand to follow her back out to our boys.

It was nearing time for them to open the seating area, so the four of us grabbed more food and waited by the gates. The people watching was superb. I’d never been to a show with Stevie before, but when she hopped up with her phone, I totally knew where this was going.

“Oh my Lord. Abey, stand right there. Oh wow. Jesus, um, yeah, this is going to be a money shot!” She took the picture, and I hurried to her side to look.

We burst out laughing at the picture of a guy totally up his girlfriend’s skirt from the rear. She was rocking out to the bands on the side stage, offbeat of course, and he was looking like he was going to splooge all over her ass cheeks.

McShane glanced over and shook his head. “You, too, Abra? You do know this is what she was doing when I met her? She and Maryland were terrible about it.”

Us girls giggled and I gave Kelly a demure look.

Confused, he stepped over to look at Stevie’s phone and his eyes bugged out of his head. “Mother of Pearl! Is he—”

“Oh yeah,” I narrated the scene. “Here it goes, here it goes…BAM!” The four of us had given up any attempts to hide our gawking as we watched this guy ejaculate in his pants. There was no other way to describe the look on his face, the slight rocking of his pelvis into his girlfriend’s ass…
