“Can I come?”
“I don’t know.Canyou?” Myra’s hand lowered still.
“No.” Elisa laughed and pushed Myra’s hand away. “I meant tonight. I want to meet your friends.”
???
After hours of staring at a computer because she couldn’t use power tools on the three hours of sleep she had gotten after spending all night with Elisa, she went home to quickly change into something more befitting of taking her date to a bar to meet her friends and splashed some cold water on her face to try to freshen up a little. Myra threw on a button-down shirt and a pair of jeans, tucking the shirt into them and grabbing her only pair of brown suede boots.
“Well, hello,” she said when she walked outside and saw Elisa and Buster in the front yard.
“Hey. I’m just letting him take care of his business before we go,” Elisa said. “Gwen is going to stop by in a couple of hours and spend some time with him so that he’s not alonefor too long. I told her she could join us if she wanted after that. Is that okay? She’s on a job right now.”
Myra kissed her quickly when she approached and said, “Of course, it’s okay.” She then looked down at Buster, who was sniffing her shoes, and added, “Hey, Buster? I brought you something.” She held out a dog treat that she’d bought a pack of earlier on her lunch break. “Can I give it to him?”
“Well, now you have to because you told him you got him something,” Elisa said, smiling at her.
Myra knelt down in front of the dog and gave him the long, skinny treat that looked like beef jerky. He took it instantly and crouched down to eat it, no longer caring about her being there.
“You look great,” Myra said when she stood back up and took in Elisa’s blue sweater and dark jeans.
“So do you. I really like this tucked-in shirt look you seem to wear often. It makes me want tountuck it later.”
Myra winked at her and asked, “Should we go?”
“Let me get him back inside and give him a bone. He’ll occupy himself with that for at least an hour and won’t notice me being gone.”
They walked inside the house, and Elisa let Buster off the leash before she grabbed one of the bone treats from the box in the kitchen and tossed it to him.
“I promise, I’ll finish this for you,” Myra said, looking at the work she still needed to do.
“It’s not your fault. I keep distracting you.”
Elisa moved in front of her, and Myra wrapped her arms around her, pulling Elisa back against her.
“I like how you distract me.”
“Me too.” Elisa chuckled and placed her arms on top of Myra’s at her waist. “And can I ask you a question?”
“Yes,” Myra said before she kissed her neck.
“How will you be introducing me to your friends tonight? Am I your date?”
“How would youlikeme to introduce you tonight?”
“I know it’s early, but–”
“Just tell me,” Myra said. “You won’t scare me away,” she added in a whisper. “I’m too far gone now.”
“Your girlfriend,” Elisa replied. “I want to be your girlfriend.”
“Then, that’s how I’ll introduce you tonight,” Myra said. “Hello, friends. This is my girlfriend, Elisa. How was that? It was my first time saying it, so cut me so slack on the delivery.”
Elisa turned in Myra’s arms, and her expression was more serious than Myra expected.
“Change your mind already?” Myra asked.
“No,” Elisa said with a small smile. “I just never thought this would happen, and here you are. I have a girlfriend. I’ve made love with my girlfriend, and I loved every second of it. I had to wash all my bedding today because it was easy to see howmuchI loved every second of it.”
