Thanatos did a quick scan. He felt as if he’d been run over by a truck, but there was no sharp pain. “Bruised and battered, but nothing too bad.”

Gregory tightened his hold on him. “Eh…there is something I need to tell you.”

Tensing, Thanatos tilted his head, so he could watch him. “You killed all the psychics, didn’t you?”

“What? No, no, we didn’t. A few wanted to leave, and we let them.”

“Leave? Leave to where?” They’d have nowhere to go. How would they survive on the streets? What if they were caught again?

“Easy. They’re not like you. They have real names and id cards; some are in contact with their family and drive their own cars and so on.”

“What?”

“Yeah, it’s different from how you lived. Or for some, at least. Kratos is still here, as is Arawn and Himeros, but Echo and Moneta sign contracts for three months at a time. If they want to leave after, they can. They were not there against their will.”

“What?”

“Yeah, I don’t know how it works, but they asked to be let go, and left us their contact information saying we could hire them if we needed a job done.”

Thanatos stared. It hadn’t been a rescue case. He’d been shot. Again. Had risked everyone’s life, including all the wolves’ lives over nothing that needed fixing. “What about Penthus and Aletheia?”

Gregory shrugged. “They’re still here but haven’t said if they’re gonna stay or not. Sounded as if maybe they had somewhere they needed to be, a sister to see or something.”

“What about the superintendent?”

“The wolves are taking care of it. They’re holding a grudge.” Gregory grinned. “Last I heard, they had an address. I don’t think it’ll be much longer.”

“But she might have important information.”

Gregory nodded. “Alaric will take care of it.”

Thanatos wanted to argue, wanted to be there when they got to her, wanted to learn as much as he could, but he hardly had the energy to stay awake, so it was for the best to leave the reins to someone else.

“There is something else.” Gregory looked nervous and a knot formed in Thanatos’ gut.

“What?”

“When you were passed out, I did something.”

“Did something? Something what?” Thanatos narrowed his eyes. “Please tell me you didn’t fuck someone else.”

It sounded as if Gregory choked on his tongue or something. “What? No, of course not.”

“Why is it of course not? You’re good-looking, we had a castle full of masculine men, adrenaline high and all that.”

“Masculine men? Do you want masculine men? Alpha werewolves and such?”

Was there a flash of insecurity? Nah, not Gregory. Or was it? “You might be too pretty for your own good, but you’re not exactly feminine.”

“You’re my mate. I bit you while I fed you my blood because you were not going to be fucking tied to Zidane.”

He spoke so fast Thanatos had a hard time making out the words.

“I know I should’ve asked first. And I know we haven’t known each other long, but you’re mine, and I’m not letting you go.”

“Hold up. What?”

“You’re my mate.” He grimaced. “I created the blood bond while you were unconscious.”
