“Uh…because he’s in heat?” Unlocking the door, I flipped on the light, leaving it open for Wyatt to follow me or not. It really didn’t matter much to me. I needed to get back to Robert. I could feel it, like a prickling sensation moving under my skin. Levi and I had a bond, and this is what that felt like, only more intense somehow. While it seemed fast for a bond between us, especially since we weren’t mate claimed yet, it was there all the same. I couldn’t deny it, as my skin rippled again with the sensation that I needed to get to my mate.

“His bedroom is down here,” Wyatt called, moving past me, towards the bedroom I knew was Robert’s from my previous visit. Following, Wyatt was already placing items of clothing in a designer carry on. Whistling under my breath at the Louis Vuitton bag, Wyatt stopped stuffing socks and underwear in, raising his brow at me in a question.

“What? Oh, this?” he waved to the bag, “My parents are loaded, didn’t you know?”

“No, I didn’t, but it doesn’t matter to me either way.”

Robert didn’t live like he was “loaded” as Wyatt claimed. His cabin was smaller, a lot smaller than Wyatt’s own home, and the car he was driving was a modestToyota Camry. While it was new, it wasn’t exactly a luxury vehicle. His clothes were designer labels, but nothing else screamed money. Neither did his job working at his son’s daycare. Still, I wasn’t lying to Wyatt. Robert could be dirt poor, and it wouldn’t change my feelings for the man. Character meant more to me than someone’s bank account.

Besides, I had enough for both of us.

“Good,” he came out of the ensuite, and put some toiletries in the bag, before zipping it. “Pops told me you're fated mates. I’m assuming the fact that you’re here, and he’s not, means that he wants you to spend his heat with him?”

Nodding my head, I took the bag from his outstretched hands. “Yes. I want you to know I asked him first. Before…I mean, while he was still able…”

Fucking hell, this was an awkward conversation to have with your mate’s adult child. I felt like a young, inexperienced alpha being interrogated by my omega’s parent. Granted Wyatt was probably only about ten years younger than me, but still…awkward.

“I’m not taking advantage of him,” I finally finished.

Wyatt nodded his head, moving quickly back into the living room and grabbing a fuzzy pink throw blanket from the back of the couch. “It’s his favorite blanket. He might want something of his own.”

Taking the soft blanket, I draped it over my arm. “Thank you. I’ll take good care of him, I promise.”

“Oh, I know you will,” Wyatt told me, as he locked the door behind us. “Because if you don’t, my big bad wolf of a mate will make you sorry. Crocodile or not.”

Well, okay then. He probably wasn’t wrong. I was a decent sized alpha, but Becks was built like a proverbial brick wall, and I really didn’t want to get on the man’s bad side if I could help it.

“Tell Pops to call me when he can, please,” Wyatt stopped when he was halfway to his house, “I…worry. I know I shouldn’t. That it’s silly.”

“I’ll have him call.” Placing Robert’s things on the passenger seat, I promised, then made my way to the driver’s side.

“Jackson,” Wyatt called softly, and I turned to meet the glow of his eyes across the darkened yard.

“Yeah?”

“Be gentle with him? My alpha mother is…not a kind person. Pops and me, we’re just getting to really know each other, but he’s a good man. He deserves someone to show him…well, someone to treat him like he deserves to be treated.”

Swallowing hard, I nodded. “He deserves the world. And if he’ll let me, I’ll give it to him.”

“Thank you,” Wyatt whispered, his voice choked full of emotion, something in his tone squeezing my chest.

A shadow emerged from the darkness, large and brawny, and the wolf scent of him carried on the wind hitme. Becks strode quickly towards me, and even as big as I was, as deadly as I could be in my shifted form, my fingers tightened on the door handle of my car.

The stern-faced man suddenly grinned at me and he looked ten years younger, holding out his hand. Peering down I realized he had a handful of knotting condoms, and I took them gratefully.

Blowing out a breath, I almost laughed hysterically. “Uh, thanks. I was going to stop and get some. We kind of…didn’t think about it.”

“Yeah, that happens,” Becks slapped me on the shoulder with one wide hand. I wasn’t a small guy by any means, but standing next to him I felt small. “I’m not sure it matters with Roberts ah…umm…” he cleared his throat, looking uncomfortable. “Well, his age, but better safe than sorry.”

“Yeah,” I agreed, needing to get back to my mate.

Chapter Twelve

Robert

Whining, I clawed at the sheets, bunching the material in my fists. My body writhed, covered in sweat and slick. My brain was cloudy, and all I could concentrate on was the desire that thrummed through me, the fire that licked at my skin, an overwhelming need to be filled.

I needed my alpha.
