The door opened and shut then footsteps made their way into the area where we were. G looked irritated, but the moment he looked at his wife, it dispersed. He smiled in her direction, assuring her before looking at me. “They’re gone and I already called Rennix.”

I nodded.

“Where is Adonis?” Beyah asked, handing her fork to her husband and reaching for the third one I set on the counter.

“With my sister. She promised him she would take him to The Shedd yesterday, but she ended up keeping him for the weekend.”

Beyah nodded. “I didn’t know you had a sister. She’s older?”

I shook my head. “She’s a college student at UIC. She was supposed to come to the pool party, but she’s young and caught up in her own life most of the time.”

Beyah giggled. “Yeah, college age. I remember those days and I was indeed caught up in my own world a lot.”

Of course G cleared his throat, peering up from his phone.

She laughed and so did I. Dimitri stayed for a while before ultimately leaving Beyah and me alone. For the most part we talked and cracked a few jokes, but I had every intention of getting her hair finished as quickly as possible because I was exhausted and it seemed to get worse as time went on.

“You’re quiet, what’s up?” Beyah’s voice interrupted my continuous thoughts an hour into me finishing up her hair.

“Honestly, I’m wearing thin. Lately I get so damn exhausted out of nowhere.”

“Are you pregnant?”

Her saying pregnant immediately made me think about the pregnancy test in the bathroom. There was no way I could forget I took a pregnancy test, but with recent events, my focus was a bit thrown off. But her saying it made me feel like I needed to get to that bathroom.

“Um… hold that thought.”

I rushed out of the living room straight to the master bathroom. When I walked in, the test was waiting for me, sitting on the counter in the exact place I had left it. On the screen there was no line because of course I bought digital. The test read pregnant, nothing special, nothing spectacular. Pregnant.

“Um, are you alright in here?” Beyah’s voice broke my trance with the test I now held in my hands.

“Uh, yes. I’m uh?—”

“Pregnant.” She finished for me, then began to clap happily. Then she stopped abruptly. “Wait… are we not happy about this?”

“Yes, we’re happy. We’re just processing.”

She nodded. “Process all you want, just know we got you. We are family. Wait till you tell Jade. She’s gonna go nuts and be all in your face. As a matter of fact, she’s gonna start randomly sending you supplements.”

I laughed at the thought, but I welcomed it. Though I was petrified of this pregnancy, one thing was very clear about everything happening right now. This time was nothing like the last. Now, I had more than just my mother, sister, and Harlem in my corner. I had a man who had singlehandedly made me love him and integrated both me and my son into his life. What more could I ask for?

Chapter 16

Rennix

When my brother called me and told me he walked up on the police trying to intimidate Caya, I saw red. I wanted to return to old habits and vent both of their skulls, but I couldn’t. Not now, because for once in my life I was moving off emotion and that would make things worse than they were. I didn’t need that, no matter how much easier I thought it would be to splatter their shit all over the concrete.

I looked up from my computer, finding my phone sitting on the desk. If I called Caya and anything in her tone was fucked up, I’d commit murder. I’d be behind bars, because in my eyes no man walked up on your woman, especially if his problem was with you. There were very few things in this world I played about and a motherfucker had tried mine. I was seething on the inside which made this shit ten times worse.

“Yo, you really gotta learn how to close that door. Anybody could come in here?”

“And catch weighted pressure.” I grimaced, unable to hide how pissed I was from my twin.

“Who pissed in your Jordans?”

I shook my head at my brother’s weird ass question. “Them fucking cops. Juleus and Nathan. You got any movement on either of them?” I knew my brother well enough to know he had been keeping tabs on them since they made that unnecessary ass trip to my club.

“I had them looked into last week. Why you ask? What did they do?” Reminisce looked up from his phone at me.
