“Who are you expecting?”
“I’m not. Why do you think I’m expecting anyone?” she rambles on.
“Sorry, I stand corrected.”
She signals to Josie for another drink. I nurse my beer, choosing to stay coherent. The tension is radiating off of her and I’m getting the impression I need to be on my guard. I’m surprised to see how much she drinks but that she’s still able to walk and talk. I don’t know how she drinks so much and not pass out.
Josie calls last orders and then threatens to get her baseball bat out ten minutes later if no one leaves. As I walk Lily to the motel, she slows as we get near and then relaxes when she doesn’t see what she thought she was going to see.
“Are you gonna tell me what the fuck tonight has been about or you still gonna act like it’s been nothing?”
She shrugs. “It has been nothing. I’m fine.”
There’s another lie. The only difference from earlier tonight and now are the motorcycles are gone.
“Sure.”
“I’d invite you in, but I’m done making bad decisions.”
“Wow, you sure know how to make a guy feel good,” I retort.
“There’s no point beating around the bush.”
I hang back on the street and watch her cross the lot and let herself into her room. I’m about to leave and go back to my truck when I see her immediately look out of the window.
She’s expecting someone and she’s scared. That much is obvious. I walk back to Josie’s, jump in my truck, and drive the short distance back to the motel. I park up across the street and settle in.
I wait for the light to go out, but it stays on. Every now and then, she pokes her nose out between the shades, takes a quick peek and then closes them again. It had to have been the motorcycles. Rides that don’t belong to anyone in the Lost Souls MC. I could call Slade or Zachery, and they could come sit outside her motel room, but I don’t move to get my phone. It might be something out of nothing.
A heavy banging wakes me but it takes a long minute to open my eyes and keep them open. Myles face is the first thing I see, with his manic smile and crazy eyes. Sitting straight, my back feels like shit and my legs are stiff and a pain shoots down my neck. He motions for me to roll down my window and I do.
“What the fuck are you sleeping here for?”
Last night comes back to me and I glance around. Lily’s room looks no different than it did at sunrise when I finally crashed and there are no motorcycles.
“Drank too much,” I lie.
“With Loose Lily, we hear.”
The twins laugh as I frown. “You’re crazy if you don’t think Slade has his ears to the ground when it comes to his sister,” Mason tells me.
“Doesn’t explain howyouheard?”
It’s still early. I can’t see them having been to the club and then back in town already.
It’s Myles who answers, “Overheard Slade asking Sparky why the fuck you’d be drinkin’ with her and wondering if you had put any part of your anatomy inside her as he knows how loose she can be.”
Fuck my life. I will now have Slade looking for me, and though he’s double my age, I’m still wary of his wrath.
“So, is she worth the hassle you’re gonna get?” Mason asks.
“Yeah, I’ve seen the appeal of Lil myself, but she must be something to have all the guys climbing on top of her,” Myles quips.
“I wouldn’t know, I slept in my truck all night.”
Both of their brows knit together and then they burst out into laughter. “You’ve fucked her,” Myles says.
“What the fuck?”
