The Snakes and Maura were deadly—as women.
“The party is in six hours,” Gamble said, reading the time on his watch.
Poe knew what he needed to do, and he hoped that Gamble didn’t mind.
“I have to make sure everything is ready to go, and I need to talk to the staff, telling them that we’re going to be shutting down.”
“How will you explain it?” Gamble asked, so they were on the same page.
“I’m going to go with‘extended honeymoon’and pay for the rest of the year. They should buy it.”
Yeah, he believed that.
Poe pointed.
“The food service trucks are here, so that means the house is going to be nonstop people in and out until the dinner after the wake.”
Yeah, and Gamble didn’t like that.
This was about getting his man out of there and keeping them safe. With this many people around them, that made this more difficult. With family friends, and other nobility, it wasn’t as dangerous.
Von couldn’t buy a rich person as easily as someone who worked hard at a job. That meant that anyone here could be on his payroll.
“Did you get the code changed?” he asked.
He nodded.
“I did it in the app. It’s Diablo’s birthday,” he admitted, and told him the date.
Well, thank God that was done.
Glancing over, he focused on Poe.
“How long will it take you to check in with everyone?” he asked, making plans for their safety for the day. There were too many unknown variables for them to just walk around, or get trapped in their room.
Poe considered it.
“Maybe not that long. Why?” he asked.
He was blunt.
“I want to get you off of this estate until the party. I don’t trust the people wandering around. I’m likely being paranoid, but I can’t risk getting shanked and you getting taken away in one of those vans.”
Oh, Jesus.
“Is that a possibility?”
Gamble nodded.
“If I wanted to grab someone, I’d do just that, and there are way too many dudes here for me to watch each and every one of them. I’d feel more comfortable away from this chaos.”
Oh, well, Gamble wasn’t the only one uneasy about this. Poe was feeling anxious too.
“I’ll defer to you, Mate. You know that. This is your thing. Run it.”
For that, and that alone, Gamble was grateful. Trust was important in a relationship, and clearly, they had it between them.
Gamble made up his plan.
