He returned the smile, remembering how she’d shown him to add more pressure to his touch.
Her gaze slid over to the grill as she unlocked her chair. “I think it’s safe now.”
Renley
With filled plates, he replenished their drinks and reclaimed their seats. As he sat down, Miguel and Lukas joined them too with what seemed to be seconds. They chatted along about work and hobbies for a while, and when it was time to open presents, the cool uncle—at least that’s what Miguel called himself—joined his nieces. Lukas disappeared as well, leaving him and Eveline to watch from afar as the presents were unwrapped and the piñata slayed.
“Would you mind wrestling through to get me some cake once it’s cut?” she asked.
“It would be my pleasure.”
He was blessed with a heart-stopping smile then, before she turned back to the kids. “Such a sweetheart.”
“Don’t say that too loud. I take my bad boy image rather seriously.”
It earned him a chuckle and the second the cake was being dished out he jumped to his feet. Not long after he returnedwith two slices. She was right, the cake was phenomenal. Eveline laughed when hemoanedaround his first bite.
“Should I get you a napkin before you drool all over yourself?”
“That’s actually a really good idea. If I had known how good it was, I would’ve stolen the whole damn thing.”
“Selene has her own cake business. You could always order yourself one.”
“You are aware that this kind of information threatens my good looks, right? I’ll look like a stuffed turkey soon and it’ll be all your fault.”
“You’ll still have your handsome face.”
He crooked his eyebrow at her. “Now you’re just encouraging me.”
“You could always ask for a cupcake or two.”
He shook his head. “Unbelievable.”Fuck, her grin was addicting, and so was the easy banter between them. Maybe it was even flirting, who cared, it felt good.
“Renley?”
“Yes?”Kitten,he added internally.
“Do you own a cowboy hat too?”
His lips quirked up into a chocolate-tinted smirk. “What man owns boots but no hat?”
“I’m pretty sure there are a few disgraceful creatures out there.”
The grin widened into a full smile. “I do.”
“You don’t happen to have a picture?”
“That is something you’ll have to wait and see in person.”
“You mean if I anticipate it long enough, it’ll become a sweeter treat.”
“You believe seeing me with a hat is a treat?”
“Of course.”
Fuck, now it was his turn to blush. “I like how you’re not shy about saying what you think.”
“Ah, that comes with age.”
