“Good. I like that it makes you happy.”
Unable to look him in the eyes, she picked at her fingers. “Will you be my friend again?”
“I’ve always been your friend.”
“I know, but you haven’t been the same since my father started breathing down your neck.”
“My distance doesn’t mean I love you any less, Scarlett. I just don’t want to be put in a position where I can’t be close to you at all. I still don’t know if he’ll take me off your detail.”
“I’ve asked for you to stay on it.”
Kurt sighed and let his head fall. “I know and I can’t tell you how much your trust means to me. But I fucked up, and you got hurt. My only job was to get you home safe.”
“And you did so many times before.”
Scarlett wanted to warn him of how little time they had left, and she intended to spend as much of it together as she could, consequences be damned. The urge to go with her mates grew stronger by the second and the only reason she hadn’t left yet was because of him and her family.
“You should lie down again. You look like you’re about to pass out.”
Scarlett knew she was right when Kurt listened instead of arguing. She helped him get comfortable, surrounding him with fluffy pillows before she settled in the armchair. He dozed off soon after, but Scarlett wasn’t ready to leave. She cracked open her book, settling in for the evening.
Chapter Thirteen
Ezra
The three men were finishing up dinner when Mateo’s phone rang. Mateo reached for it, but Ezra was faster.
“We were starting to worry, sweet little princess.”
“I was busy.”
“Clearly too busy to come and see us. It’s been over a week.”
“I told you I’d call for you.”
“Are you calling for us tonight?”
“Dad is out for dinner with Mom, and Maximilian is going to the club.”
Well, that wasn’t a “no.” “We’ll be with you shortly.”
“Ask her if she wants us to bring anything. She hasn’t left the house in a while,” Mateo suggested.
“Mateo is offering to bring you anything your little heart desires.”
Scarlett paused, seeming to think over all the possibilities. “That ice cream café you saw me at. It has this vanilla cup with melted chocolate sauce. I’m not sure if they’re still open.”
“I would break in and steal it for you if necessary.”
“Please don’t.”
“We’ll see, little princess.” Ezra ended the call before she could even think to protest. Whatever his princess wanted, she was going to get.
“What did she want?” Mateo asked, already slipping into his shoes.
“Ice cream from the café in the park.”
As usual, Vince drove while Mateo checked the hours for the café. They were in luck. With barely any traffic they made it to the café thirty minutes before closing.
