She’s trying to hold it together for the police statement. I can tell she’s planning to break down after.
Who could blame her? She and Cassidy were more like sisters than friends.
The police spend hours asking us questions, uniquely repeating the same questions to see if our answers change. My answers come out robotic. I feel numb all over, still in denial about Cassidy being an actual missing person.
Lillian escorts the police out, and she and Blair completely break down together. Feeling uncomfortable and out of place, I wait patiently before saying my goodbyes and ask them to stay in touch if they hear anything about Cassidy. After many promises telling me they will, I head to my car.
Mindlessly, I drive to my fraternity house. As I pull into the parking lot, I realize I don’t even know how I got here safely. I drove on autopilot.
I blink and look around a few times, trying to get my bearings.
As I walk up to the side door of the house, Archer comes barreling out, knocking into me, and I am thrown off balance, almost falling on my ass.
After such a mentally draining night, I shout out at him, “Watch where the fuck you’re going, man!”
Immediately, he straightens up and glares at me. “Be careful who you’re talking to.”
“I really don’t give a shit, Archer. I am not in the mood, and you are obviously drunk.” I try to step around him to get to the door.
A couple of other brothers come from the other side of the house to see what is going on.
“Still crying about your girl, Tyler?” Archer sneers. “She was just a warm hole; you’ll find another.”
My spine tingles, and anger spreads through my body as I jerk back toward him. “What the fuck did you just say?” I growl.
“I said you’re going to have to find another hole for your dick; she’s a ghost now.” He leers back at me, snapping his fingers and chuckling.
Not thinking, I lunge for him, and some of the brothers grab hold of me and pull me back. One brother tries to push him into one of their cars to get him away from me.
Anger contorts my face as I try to get free from the brothers holding me back.
“Don’t do anything stupid,” one of them whispers to me. “He’s the president; don’t forget who you’re messing with.”
Realization of the mistake I made hits me, but then I am overtaken by confusion at what Archer said.
I stand frozen as Archer laughs hysterically with two of the older brothers as they jump into an Audi Q8.
Pure terror races through my body, and I stare in Archer’s direction, my gut twisting, knowing he knows what happened to Cassidy. There is no way he could be that evil?
Coming to my senses, I shake my head, and the guys who are holding me let me go.
Quickly, I mentally check off how it would be impossible for Cassidy to just disappear like Archer implied. She is a student at the school, a sorority sister, for Christ’s sake.
From my understanding, we only sell women in more vulnerable situations, not those with connections, or in areas where people would notice if they were missing.
I slowly walk up to my room, my mind in a different place.
Cassidy is missing, but missing people can be found. This is just a misunderstanding. Information will come out, and she will be back soon.
I fall asleep trying to comfort myself, but deep down, I know something terrible happened to her.
CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
I can barely open my eyes, and as soon as I do, my body throbs with pain and soreness. Instantly recalling yesterday, I shut my eyes, trying to block out the memories.
“Hurry the fuck up, ladies!” one of the guards yells at us.
Groaning, I pull myself up into a sitting position, allowing my eyes to adjust to the spotlights above us.
